The Center for Electronic & Magnetic Nanoscale Composite Multifunctional Materials (ENCOMM) Postdoctoral Fellowship Program Instructions for Applicants Candidates for the ENCOMM Postdoctoral Program are selected based on their research and academic accomplishments, and the strength of their research proposal. Candidates must display superb ability in materials research and must show definite promise of becoming outstanding leaders in their field. All applicants must identify an Ohio State University faculty member (sponsor) who will write a letter of recommendation and agree to be their research supervisor. The Ohio State University faculty member must be an ENCOMM affiliate. If you have not yet identified an Ohio State University faculty member, a full list of affiliated faculty can be found on the ENCOMM website (http://encomm.osu.edu/). Deadline: The deadline to receive all the application materials is Friday, March 1, 2013. Salary and Term: The postdoctoral position carries a salary of $50,000 per annum for up to two years, with an additional $20,000 per year for research support and travel. The faculty sponsor is responsible for providing any additional support (including operating expenses, access to equipment, etc.) necessary for the completion of the proposed project. This support should be specified in the letter of support (see below). Candidate Eligibility: Candidates must have received their PhD recently, typically within three years, or be in the process of completing their degree requirements. All PhD requirements must be met at the commencement of the appointment. It is required that candidates identify an Ohio State faculty sponsor at the time of application and discuss the application with the sponsor. How to Apply: Candidates must upload/send the following documents 1. Research proposal a. Proposals should be ≤2 pages (not including references), 12 point font, 1 inch margins b. Please provide a title for your proposal c. Proposals should address the following: i. Background and importance of the proposed work ii. The research you expect to conduct at The Ohio State University iii. Tentative timeline or milestones for your research 2. 3. 4. 5. 6. iv. The broader impacts of the proposed work d. Candidates should keep in mind that application packages will be reviewed by the ENCOMM governing board, whose members have diverse backgrounds. CV, including list of publications, abstracts and significant presentations Graduate School Transcripts The following criteria must be met for a document to be accepted as a transcript: a. Transcripts must include the name of the school, the student’s name, the school’s watermark, official seal or symbol and the Registrar’s signature. b. Copies or faxed copies of official transcripts are acceptable. If degree has been completed, transcripts must reflect degree date. c. If the school does not provide transcripts, a copy of a diploma or letter from the Graduate School Office stating that you are enrolled or have completed all the requirements for the Ph.D. is acceptable. This letter must be on official school letterhead and signed by a representative from the Graduate School Office. d. If the transcripts are not in English, please provide one of the following in addition to the transcripts: i. Translation of the information contained in the transcript ii. Brief summary of the information contained in the transcripts e. The following documents will not be accepted as Graduate School Transcripts: Unofficial grade reports downloaded from the university intranet, Documents missing the student’s name or school’s name, Documents missing the degree date. Cover Letter (optional) Required Supporting Materials a. Recommendation letter (≤ 2 pages) from OSU faculty sponsor that addresses the strengths of the candidate, the merits of the research proposal and how the candidate’s work is expected to contribute to or grow research programs at Ohio State. In addition, any resources that the faculty sponsor is committing to the proposed research program should be specified (access to equipment, additional support for materials and supplies, etc.). b. Three letters of recommendation. Please advise your references of the following requirements: i. Letters must be sent directly via e-mail to Zuurdeeg.3@osu.edu ii. Letters must be in a PDF file from the individual(s) with a signature on official letterhead. iii. In the subject line please include name of the candidate. Post-Award Conditions: All publications resulting from this award should list the candidate’s affiliation as the Center for Electronic & Magnetic Nanoscale Composite Multifunctional Materials (ENCOMM) and ENCOMM support should be acknowledged using the following language, as appropriate: “This work was partially supported through the ENCOMM Post-Doctoral Fellowship Program.” Or “This work was supported through the ENCOMM Post-Doctoral Fellowship Program.” In addition, the successful applicant will be required to periodically present their research at an ENCOMM Research Seminar, not less than once per year.
