Year 8/9 IEP Writing Listening Speaking and Reading Objective – To understand the text and be able to answer questions using point, quote, explantion. To be able to discuss and debate different sides of an argument. To further develop reading comprehension skills and summary writing skills. Week Activities Resources Possible Assessment Focus Week 1 Lesson 1: LO To write a short paragraph with appropriate structure In groups students to create and name their own holiday island. They are to draw their ideas, showing the activites/features on their island. Teach main points of a paragraph. Topic sentence etc Give a scaffolded structure. Students to select a three features of their island and say why they are worth going to. Students are then to write a short paragraph of a few sentences convincing people to come to their island, using appropriate transition signals and support. Lesson 2: LO Write grammatically correct sentences in a paragraph and identify the different parts of a paragraph. Complete paragraph from last lesson. Use the ‘Great sentences for great paragraphs book’. Week 2 Lesson 1: LO to write a topic sentence and supporting sentences. Continue with Paragraph book. Look at the imperative structure and how we can write sentences beginning with verbs to give instructions. Students to write directions from how to get from one place to another. How to get from home to school etc. Teacher to check. Write another paragraph giving instructions on how to make something, students can choose i.e sandwich. Highlight use of imperatives. Week 3 Thoughts and Notions: Inventors. Aim: Develop vocabulary, spelling and reading skills. Brainstorm a list of famous inventors, what were their inventions why were they famous? Make vocabulary list of words in bold in the text. Read through the text as a class, discussing key points and questioning students to check comprehension. Do the vocabulary exercises. Students to complete the questions on the last page answering in full sentences. Check answers as a class. Week 4 Thoughts and Notions: Pencils and Pens. Aim: Develop vocabulary, spelling and reading skills. Continue the routine from the previous week developing vocabulary and spelling and comprehension on a range of topics. Discuss when the pencil and pen was invented? Studnets to guess. How were they similar/different to today? Read through the text as a class, discussing key points and questioning students to check comprehension. Do the vocabulary exercises. Students to complete the questions on the last page answering in full sentences. Check answers as a class. Week 5 Aim: Develop Paragraph Writing skills Go through examples of how to give supporting points to our topic sentence. Look Students to design a chocolate restaurant where every dish is some form of chocolate based food. Design a restaurant and write a paragraph describing the food describing why people should go. Using the ideas from the paragraph design a brochure, using the language ideas from the lesson, advertising your chocolate restaurant. Week 6 Thoughts and Notions: Metric System Aim: Develop vocabulary, spelling and reading skills. Continue the routine from the previous week developing vocabulary and spelling and comprehension on a range of topics. Opening discussion/questions: What is the metric system? Give examples. Who invented it? Which country? Why? Which countries use it today? Which don’t. Then read the article and answer discussion questions from the start of the lesson. Make note of new vocabulary and how to spell the new words Do the vocabulary exercises. Students to complete the questions on the last page answering in full sentences. Check answers as a class. Week 7 Aim: Develop Speaking skills. Continue with the theme of new inventions.
