IMPORTANT NOTE: *THIS IS NOT A BIOGRAPHICAL WORK* Biographical details should be included only as a means to support the arguments presented. Some examples are:

*Note- The PowerPoint project is not simply a biography. Yes it is important to understand what area of the country your person lived in and how this affected their upbringing, what type of education they received, etc. I am looking for specific instances that explain how this person became a prominent

African American and helped shape modern American Culture.

PowerPoint Outline:

-The slide needs to be somewhere between 10-15 slides –enough slides for a 4-5 minute presentation

(This does not include pictures)

-Include a cover slide showing what your PPT is about.

- 1-2 slides should cover the Biographical information about the person. The rest of the slides can be dedicated to explaining what this person actually did.

- You must cite your work using MLA Format.

-Your citations must come from at least three sources (of these sources one must be a primary source.

*The purpose of this project besides the public speaking part is intended to help us begin to see different methods of research and how we can apply many sources to one theme.

-Before starting this paper you should write down what American values are and a few people who represent this. Think about your topic hard and once you pick a person you must write a paper about that person.

Minimum Length: THREE FULL PAGES / Maximum Length: Five Pages

-Typed

-Double Spaced

-Point Size 12

- Times New Roman Font

- Must include title page

-One Inch Margins top, bottom and sides

-Indent five spaces at the start of each paragraph; skip two spaces between sentences, one between words, none between letters within a word

-Must have at three different sources. Two must come from TWO DIFFERENT BOOKS and one those must be a primary source. The Internet counts only as a secondary source.

-Use MLA notation within the paper; Footnoting will be acceptable

-Include a Bibliography at the end of the paper

TIPS FOR A GOOD PAPER

-Start with a good introductory sentence and paragraph that clearly establishes the reason for the subjects importance

-Avoid juvenile writing style e.g. “George Washington was our first president…”

-Avoid personal pronouns e.g. “I Believe… or “In my opinion…” or “You should” or “One would think”

-Avoid Definitions e.g. “Webster’s dictionary descries the word hero as…”

-Quotes are fine but they should not be overly long for such a short paper and should be used to support

-Proofread the paper thoroughly

-Be aware of verb tense

-Properly divide the paper into paragraphs

-Avoid passive use of language

-Avoid slang
