CCGS Calendar of Events 2015-2016
August 30 (1-5p.m.) Helen Warner Branch of Willard Library Lock In. Meet at Helen Warner Branch Library, 36 Minges
Creek Place, Battle Creek, MI. Spend a Sunday afternoon in the closed, just for attendees, library. Meet fellow
genealogists and research with other attendees. Calhoun County Genealogical Society members will be available to help
you with your research. Registration is required by calling the library at 269 968-8166.
*September 22-Annual Meeting. The society will be holding its annual meeting with board of director’s elections.
Probate Judge Jaconette will be in attendance to update attendees on the recent probate record digitization project
society members completed.
September 26-Homer Fall Festival. Look for our table at Blair Farm, one mile east of Homer, Michigan on M-60.
October 27-Albion District Library. Meet at 501 S. Superior St. Albion, Michigan. Albion District librarian, Jennifer
Wood, will share with our group the latest news on Albion area resources and digitization projects being done at the
library.
November 24-Meet at Fort Custer and Tour Fort Custer Historical Society. Colonel John Anderson will provide the
group with a tour of the historical society. Registration is mandatory by calling 269 275-0462 after November 1st.
*January 26-Beginning Genealogy. If you are a beginner or a seasoned genealogist, join us to learn how to find your
ancestors. Ideas, techniques, resources, websites and more to help you in your research will be presented.
February 23-Marshall District Library. Meet at 124 W. Green St., Marshall, MI. Local history librarian, Chelsea Johnson,
will provide a tour and information on the resources available in the library’s local history collection.
*March 22-Researching War of 1812 Local genealogist, James Jackson, will provide an overview of the causes and
significant events of the War of 1812, the only war partially fought on Michigan soil. Jackson will discuss records
available, including military, bounty land and pension records.
*April 26-Seeking Michigan. Archives of Michigan Archivist, Jessica Harden, will introduce attendees to the recent
additions to the collections available on Seeking Michigan: death records from 1921-1952 and The Detroit News index.
She will give an overview of the numerous other collections available there. The talk will include a discussion of tips,
hints, and search strategies and touch on using online indexes, guides, and catalogs to prepare for visits to the Archives
of Michigan.
*May 24-Get Smart! CCGS President, Brenda Leyndyke, will present ways to keep your genealogical skills and techniques
current through genealogical education. Free resources to improve these skills will be presented.
*June 28-German Research Tips. Genealogist Don Heider, a researcher in the United States and Germany, will provide
help in finding resources for tracing your German ancestors. He will provide ways of locating areas where ancestors
lived by using maps and the internet.
