2013 Fall Dental Health Conference Friday-Sunday, November 8-10, 2013 Keizer Renaissance Inn & Convention Center Keizer, Oregon Continuing Education Courses CE #1 – Oral Health Management of the HIV+ Patient (3 CEU) Friday, November 8th, 9:00 AM–12:00 PM Dental health providers must be aware of new developments in HIV diagnosis and treatment, and play an active role in the HIV+ patient’s interprofessional health care team. Oral lesions are often the first indication of HIV infection in previously undiagnosed HIV+ patients. Development of new oral lesions in HIV+ patients may indicate treatment failure due to lack of patient compliance or the emergence of viral resistance to antiretroviral drugs. Many dental clinics are now implementing rapid HIV testing to help identify undiagnosed HIV+ patients. And systemic effects of HIV infection and HIV treatment protocols must be considered when providing dental care for the HIV+ patient. This course will review the basics of HIV infection, outline treatment goals of Highly Active Antiretroviral Therapy (HAART), provide current HIV epidemiological data for the state of Oregon, present common oral manifestations of HIV infection especially those that may indicate treatment failure, and discuss medical considerations for the dental management of HIV+ patients. This course is sponsored by the Northwest AIDS Education and Training Center. Mark M. Schubert, DDS, MSD is Professor of Oral Medicine at the University of Washington School of Dentistry and Director of Oral Medicine for the Seattle Cancer Care Alliance. Dr. Schubert has been closely involved with the management of HIV infected patients since the early years of the HIV epidemic. He has been involved with patient care, education and research through the University of Washington and the Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center. Dr. Schubert is a board member of the Dental Alliance for AIDS/HIV Care (DAAC) and was a regional lecturer for the ADA’s AIDS Speaker Bureau. He has lectured extensively throughout the Pacific Northwest, Europe, and Brazil on the oral health management of HIV infected patients. Dr. Schubert has been a trainer for the Northwest-AIDS Education and Training Center (NW-AETC) for over twenty years and has served as the NW-AETC Dental Director since 2001. CE #2 – Prescription Writing Guidelines for Dental Hygienists in Oregon (3 CEU) Friday, November 8th, 9:00 AM–12:00 PM All dental hygienists licensed in Oregon may legally write prescriptions for fluoride, fluoride varnish, antimicrobial solutions for mouth rinsing and other non-systemic antimicrobial agents. In addition, expanded practice dental hygienists (EPDHs) may legally write prescriptions for prophylactic antibiotics and non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs if they have established a practice agreement with a licensed dentist. This course will provide guidelines for writing prescriptions for these medications as well as tips for working with pharmacists & pharmacies. Dr. Mark A. Della Paolera and Dr. Jeff Fortner are both Assistant Professors with the School of Pharmacy at Pacific University. Dr. Della Paolera teaches pharmacy practice and pulmonology, and he has several years of experience in retail, hospital, and ambulatory care pharmacy practice sites. Dr. Fortner teaches pharmacy practice and compounding while maintaining a practice site at an independent compounding/retail pharmacy. 1 CE #3 – Managing Early Childhood Caries: From Pregnancy to Exfoliation (3 CEU) Friday, November 8th, 2:00 PM – 5:00 PM The management of early childhood caries can challenge even the most skilled clinician. The dental hygienist’s responsibility begins with the pregnant patient and lasts until the child exfoliates deciduous teeth. This course prepares the dental hygienist to implement preventative and stabilization of early childhood caries utilizing First Tooth training materials. Development of the First Tooth curriculum was done with input from the American Academy of Pediatrics as well as other successful programs nationwide, and follows the evidence-based practice for early childhood caries prevention (ECCP) that includes a risk assessment, anticipatory guidance, intervention as appropriate, and referral to a dental home or a specialist if needed. First Tooth training topics include the prevalence and impact of oral disease; how to conduct an oral health risk assessment; how to provide culturally appropriate anticipatory guidance; fluoride varnish application; and implementation and workflow tips. This course will also cover the Maternal and Child Oral Health's recommendations for treating the pregnant patient. This course is sponsored by the Oregon Oral Health Coalition, dedicated to improving general health through oral health for all Oregonians. Karen Hall, RDH, BSDH received her BS degree in dental hygiene from the OHSU School of Dentistry in 1985. Since then she has practiced in family dental practices and community health settings. She has been involved in dental hygiene education as a supervisor for clinical rotations at OHSU and Pacific University. For the past eight years, Karen has utilized her expanded practice dental hygiene permit to provide hygiene care to patients with limited access to dental care in many different settings. She has been employed by Virginia Garcia Memorial Health Center for six years, treating pregnant women and children in the clinics, and currently in two school-based health centers. She is also contracted by the Oregon Oral Health Coalition to provide technical assistance and training for the First Tooth project, training medical and dental providers throughout the state to implement early childhood caries prevention services into their practices. CE #4 – There’s No “I” in Team: Finding the Right Fit for You Friday, November 8th, 2:00 PM–5:00 PM (3 CEU) Many hygienists are aware of their role as an area of production in private dental practice, but what does it truly mean to be a Provider? How do Providers interact with the rest of the dental team? And how can you maximize your skills and truly market yourself to your doctor? This course will help you find answers to all three questions as we discuss the role of dental hygiene as a production unit, find ways for you to leverage dental hygiene for the benefit of the whole practice, and understand the role you play in a successful, healthy dental practice. Team and patient communication styles will be discussed using the DISC profiling method, and Referral Marketing techniques to add value to your role will be practiced. Course attendees will leave with sample patient forms using DISC, along with handouts on Referral Marketing and Top Ten Interviewing Tips. This example of short term thinking has cost many dental hygienists their integrity in providing comprehensive periodontal screening, assessment and care. This presentation includes strategies for dental hygienists to take control of their schedule and provide the treatment they were trained to deliver as well as increase the financial bottom line to the practices in which they work. Lynn Stedman, BSDH, MEd, MA is currently an Associate Professor/Director of the Dental Hygiene Program at Columbia Basin College, Pasco, WA. In her years in private practice, she successfully implemented a comprehensive periodontal approach to patient care and worked as a consultant to general dental practices assisting other dental hygienists to achieve this goal as well as getting control of their schedules. CE #6 – Essential Ergonomics for Dental Professionals (3 CEU) Saturday, November 9th, 9::00 AM-12:00 PM This course will take an in-depth look at why the practice of dentistry can be so physically demanding on dental professionals. Instructions will be presented on how to work in more ergonomically balanced positions for the dental hygienist. The presentation will include how to better utilize dental equipment to support a balanced operating team and how this can enhance efficiency and help to eliminate stress. The presenters will also provide stretching and conditioning recommendations. Helping people to maintain their wellness has been a lifelong passion, which she strives to enhance through continued education. Recently, Shauna earned her dental assisting certification and dental hygiene license in the hope that by educating her patients, she could help them to maintain beautiful, healthy smiles. While in dental hygiene school, Shauna noticed how many dental professionals were in chronic pain due to stress, static positioning and repetitive motion injuries, causing dependence on pain medications and/or shortened careers. After additional training to address common issues that dental professionals face, she is able to devote her career to maintaining the wellness of both her patients and her fellow practitioners. 3 Educator Program (3 CEU Total) Saturday, November 9th, 9:00 AM–12:00 PM Blending Multiple Generations: Educational Methodologies for Successful Communication (1.5 CEU) Recognizing and understanding generational differences will allow you to leverage interpersonal and communication skills when working with patients, students, faculty and staff from different generations. According to the Accreditation Standards for Dental Hygiene Education Programs, dental hygiene graduates must be competent in “interpersonal and communication skills to effectively interact with diverse population groups and other members of the health care team.” This workshop will provide the dental hygiene educator with additional tools to prepare students to communicate effectively with patients and others from multiple generations. The Coach Approach: Communicate to Motivate through Brief Motivational Interviewing (1.5 CEU) A famous quote says the definition of insanity is, “doing the same thing over and over expecting different results.” How many of you have felt like you do the same thing over and over for patients hoping for different results? This course will introduce dental hygiene educators to the process known as Brief Motivational Interviewing (MI). MI empowers dental health professionals to coach patients to change from ‘within’ themselves. This workshop is highly interactive, allowing participants to explore and practice the concepts of Brief Motivational Interviewing. Coaching, active listening, and open ended questions will be utilized as ways to elicit change with your patients. Attending this workshop will empower the dental hygiene educator to teach your students to experiment with the use of Brief MI to coach their patients to achieving long term oral health care. Join us for a fun, dynamic program that will help you teach your students an effective method for empowering their patients to change their behavior.
