Therrien Spring 2014 Topic: Coffee Filter Color Wheels ODU Teacher Candidate Butts Road Intermediate 5th Grade 2-45min Objective: Students will paint and create their own color wheel using watercolors and coffee filters. Essential Knowledge and Skills: 1) Students will learn the basic color wheel and identify the primary, secondary, warm, cool, and complimentary colors. 2) Students will correctly paint their own color wheel. 3) Students will assemble their color wheels onto construction paper and make a sun mobile. 4) Students will describe color of the works of Mondrian, Van Gogh, and Warhol. SOLS: 5.2 The student will execute and complete works of art with attention to detail and craftsmanship. Students will learn about 6 basic colors of color wheel b. Students will identify primary, secondary, complimentary, warm, and cool colors c. Students will give examples of all d. Students will learn about Mondrian, Van Gogh, and Andy Warhol e. Students will identify and explain color schemes in each artist’s works. 2) Students will write their names on the coffee filter. 3) Teacher will lead a step-by-step demo a. Fold coffee filter in half, and then fold both sides in to create 6 pie pieces. b. Draw lines of pie pieces c. Start by painting primary colors. d. Secondary colors should be in between each primary color e. Handle wet coffee filter with care f. Second set of coffee filters will be free painting with a correct color scheme i.e. primary, secondary, warm, cool, or complimentary g. Students will write name on second set of coffee filters 4) Table monitors will collect supplies for their table. 5) Hands On: Students will begin to paint and create their coffee filter 6) Teacher will allow 5-10 minutes for clean up a. Table monitors will return paints to try and put paintbrushes and water bowls in sink b. Newspapers will be folded and wet coffee filters will lay on top of newspaper c. Newspaper with wet coffee filters will be placed on drying racks d. Students will answer topic related questions in order to line up for dismissal i. Who is Mondrian? ii. Describe Mondrian prevalent color scheme. iii. Who is Van Gogh and describe the colors he used in his works? iv. Who is Warhol and what art movement did he belong to? v. Describe Warhol’s’ color schemes. vi. Name the primary colors vii. Name the secondary colors viii. Name the complimentary colors Day 2 Teacher Preparation 1) Teacher will have precut construction paper 2) Teacher will have passed back artwork to students 1) Teacher will review color wheel and artists with students 2) Teacher will lead a step-by-step demo. a. Picking a piece of construction paper that will compliment their second free painted coffee filter b. Students will use circle tracers on construction paper c. Students will cut out circle and glue coffee filter in the middle of construction paper d. Students will creatively cut edges of circle to make a design or fringe e. Students will punch hole in top of project so yarn will feed through f. Projects will be able to hang from ceiling or windows g.
