General APT Minutes 11-4-13 Present from board: Carla Monson, Carla Nute, Mike Verlardi, Nicole Keniston, Lisa Leathers-Cox, Timm Davis, Renee Grieve, Jennifer Matney, Louise Bunker, Susan Thomas Present from APT: Jen Cohen, Allison Barkley, Judy Theman, Rhonda Onisile, Teresa Carlson, Kim Klassen, Laura Babione I. Welcome & Introductions : called to order at 8:33am a. No APT meeting in December, we’ll see you Jan. 13 th for the next APT meeting. b. Vote on Meeting Minutes from October meeting. Lisa motioned with Mike 2nd. All in favor. Motion passed. II. Teacher Rep Report: (Mrs. Bunker) a. Edgepoint CEO coming to school to help Mrs. Bunkers class develop a scratcher app for us to use at our school. b. Be Kind project has donated 3 benches now on campus for our kids that entered and won last years essay and poster contest. She wanted us to know that Be Kind is here to help teachers and students to make the right choices. The APT might also see a use for the project as well. c. Mrs. Bunker is taking an online class on school climate and it has been a real eye opener. She is hoping to bring some things back to Cocopah that we can use. d. Mrs. Bunker and Mrs. Sale’s classes have helped develop the Fall Carnival posters/flyers seen around campus. They have tied them into their curriculum by kids finding non-licensed artwork to put on the flyers. (Thanks from APT for doing this!) Carla Nute requested that final copies also be sent to her and she can make sure they get on the APT website and such. e. NJHS (National Junior Honor Society) will be holding a turkey drive on November 25 & 26 before school only. They might need some extra parent help. f. Mr. Herald (LSC – Life Skills Class teacher) would like to have a lunch for the 6 peer mentors and parents that help all his kids. He needs help! This request was passed onto Kim Klassen and the Apprecition Team. She will rally the volunteers to help with this. III. Principal Report: (Mrs. Thomas) a. Academic Aide: has been hired!!! Lisa Leather-Cox got appointed the 20 hour a week job (funded by APT) and will be starting hopefully by next week. b. Academic Assembies for 1st quarter are taking place this week. 57% of Cocopah students made the Pricipals List & Honor Roll. Hats off to a job well done students. 67% from 6th grade, 62% from 7th grade, 42% from 8th grade – all these percentages are higher than last year. c. Last year’s new district policy of students maintaining a 2.0 GPA has shown signs of improvement as well. 2% from 6th grade, 3% from 7th grade, 6% from 8th grade were the total that fell below the 2.0 mark. These are all lower than last year. d. Mrs. Thomas and Carla Nute are meeting with a district person to discuss marketing Cocopah e. Jenny Burau had a baby girl!!! Everyone is healthy! IV. Treasurer Report: (Mike Verlardi) a. Budget Update: On budget compared to last year. $145,333.18 in all accounts. b. Funding Requests: 3 were made 1. Nurse Corley has requested flip flops that she may need to help students. This can come from her allocated APT funds. Non-voting item. 2. Treats for the Academic Assemblies. This can come from our Counselor Support fund. Nonvoting item. 3. Maureen Brown requested $199 to go to a conference, Behavior Interventions That Work! This can come from our Staff Development fund. Mike motioned we send her for the $199. Jennifer Matney seconded the motion. All in favor. Motion passed. V. New/Old Business a. Carnival (Teresa Carlson): Big thanks to Mrs. Bunker, Mrs. Sale, and all the students that made the flyers for the event. Pie throwing booth still needs teachers to sign up to help. Robo call will be coming out about event. Wrist bands being sold at lunch all week. New this year – teacher tortures with times will be posted so students know when to line up for the teacher of their choice. b. Holiday Angels: May to picked up by gate right outside all the carnival festitives this Friday. They will also be available at all lunches (need help with this) and in office. Please consider being an angel to someone in need. c. Hospitality – Teacher Holiday Gifts (Allison Barkley): 1st “Cookies for Cocopah” was huge hit – thanks to those that brought cookies/treats in. Question regarding what teachers would like most for holiday gift from APT directed towards Mrs. Bunker. She said staff did like the shirts from last year and there are quite a few people on campus. Other than that, gift cards are always a hit. Allison will take a look at her budget to see if shirts are an option – typically those are an every other year purchase. d. PBIS (Susan Thomas): Kids are given tickets by teachers/staff and Susan picks 4 winners every Friday. Question came up on whether the “store” would be willing to purcahse and sell some items for Cocopah bucks? Jen Matney will follow up with Amy Pickett to see if this is possible. Another idea was to see if Jamba Juice would donate some punch cards that could also be sold – Jen Matney to follow up with that as well. The committee is trying to think of experiences they could offer to the kids as prizes as well. They were wondering if Celebrate Cocopah would put together a couple baskets that the kids could use their tickets on. Jen Cohen will follow up on that. e. Fundraising Updates (Jen Matney): Dec 18th will be Islands Resturant and Yumberry yogurt at Tatum North of Cactus. Sometime in January will be Outback Steakhouse. Feb. 5 th will be another Az Airtime. Spring adult only event to be held at Eddie’s House. Jen asked for ideas to engage 8 th graders and shopping at Fashion Square and movie night were given. f. Storing Documents on the website (Renee Grieve): Renee can store documents on website and she created a Volunteer Toolbox for that purpose. Send forms to Renee. She will be able to password protect if necessary. g. Directory (Carla Nute): Coming out this week. Looks amazing – special thanks to Denise Flanagan and her whole team. Additional directories can be purchased. h. Site Council (Carla Nute): Tax Credit Planning: We discussed a marketing campaign for increasing donations to CMS. Discussed possibly requesting donations for one or several specific items – academic aide, fine arts, and tortoise habitat. Susan and I are meeting with an SUSD marketing person after Monday’s meeting. Meeting minutes with more details will be posted on the school website hopefully by the next meeting. The next meeting is November 21st. Meeting i. Scottsdale Parent Council (Laura Babione): Heard from local legislators. The don’t like political agendas try a more personal contact approach when going to them. They talked about new grading policy and Common Core.
