ART 350: (1 Semester) This class will emphasize print making, sculpture, clay and crafts. ART: POTTERY I: (1 Semester) Inspired by famous sculptors, world cultures and contemporary artists, students will work with clay to create three dimensional works of wonder. Students will learn basic hand-building techniques such as slab and coil construction, and pinch pots. Ceramic pieces are fired and glazed. Learn to work with clay, apply glazes and use a kiln, as well as an introduction to wheel throwing. Develop the ability to create large free standing pieces. Understand all the techniques needed to create a well formed work of ceramic art. Study other Ceramic artists and apply their techniques to your art. Student will need a “work shirt” for this class to keep their clothing clean. ART: POTTERY II: (1 Semester) This course expands the skills and techniques taught in Pottery I. Students will learn a combination of hand building and wheel thrown techniques, as well as a more concentrated study of glazing formulas and methods. Pottery I is a prerequisite for this class. Student will need a “work shirt” for this class to keep their clothing clean. ART: MULTI MEDIA: (1 Semester ) Students will survey careers and vocational opportunities in art and other multimedia career avenues. They will develop an understanding of history in different arts and careers, reflect and assess merits for a variety of works/careers in various job areas such as advertising, architecture, theater, designer, clay-mation productions, photography, etc. ATHLETICS 8: (1 or 2 Semesters) Athletics at the eighth grade level includes football, basketball, and track for boys, and volleyball, basketball and track for girls. Each semester of athletic participation will substitute for a semester of required physical education. BAND 8: (2 Semesters) Emphasis on the proper fundamentals of playing woodwind, brass and percussions instruments will be stressed. Performance of concert band, literature appropriate to the level of the student, as well as solos and ensembles will be used to provide the skills needed to advance to the high school band (2 semesters) Requires some concert performances outside of the school day. CHOIR - BOYS AND GIRLS: (2 Semesters) This is a continuation of skills learned in 7th grade choral music. This course continues the study of the elements of music construction and music reading skills with an added emphasis on preparation and performance of one-part and two-part choral literature. Requires some concert performances outside of the school day. DOLLARS AND SENSE: (1 Semester) This course focuses on the foundations of personal finance in which students will learn about debt and credit, how to manage their money and different types of investment options with the workplace. ***½ credit toward high school graduation requirements. ORCHESTRA: (2 Semesters) Students will gain performance experience with appropriate orchestra literature as a member of the school string orchestra and have the opportunity to prepare and perform solos and/or ensembles. (2 semesters) Requires some concert performances outside of the school day. PRINCIPLES OF HUMAN SERVICES: (1 Semester) The class is designed to introduce basic common skills used in everyday life. The student will learn communications skills, beginning cooking skills, child development and how to clean their clothing. There are hands on labs and projects. The students also learn the importance of giving back to their community. ***½ credit toward high school graduation. PROFESSIONAL COMMUNICATION: (1 Semester) This course focuses on developing students’ abilities in communication process, verbal and nonverbal messages, interpersonal and group communication, listening, critical thinking, problem solving, and improving communication skills in professional and social settings. ***½ credit toward high school graduation requirements. SPANISH 9: (2 Semesters) This course focuses on reading, writing, speaking and listening skills. Basic grammar and vocabulary are covered. Successful completion of 8th grade Spanish will result in the student receiving one credit in high school for Spanish 1. 1 credit toward high school foreign language graduation requirement. TECHNOLOGY APPLICATIONS 1: (1 Semester) This course is a practical guide to help students effectively find, sort, and evaluate information on the Web and illustrate how they can use the Internet to strengthen critical thinking skills. TECHNOLOGY APPLICATIONS 2: (1 Semester) This class uses more advanced features from Technology Application I including the use of digital cameras, scanners, and power-point features. Technology Application 1 is a prerequisite for this class. THEATRE ARTS 200: (1 Semester) Students will explore the basic concepts and skills of theatre production. Theatre techniques such as pantomime, creative dramatics, reader’s theater, and dramatic interpretation will be emphasized as well as theatre and audience etiquette. THEATRE ARTS 300: (1 Semester) Students will continue to explore the concepts, skills and technical aspects of theatre production with additional performances. Theatre Arts 100 and 200 are pre-requisites for this class. Theatre Arts 200 is a prerequisite for this class. TEEN LEADERSHIP (1 Semester) This course is a program in which students develop leadership, personal, and business skills. They learn to develop a healthy self-concept, healthy relationships, and learn to understand the concept of personal responsibility. Students will develop skills in public speaking and communication as well as an understanding of personal image. Creative Writing 1909: (1 Semester) We will explore various literary genres, through both reading and writing, in order to improve writing and composition skills. Our goal, through writing, thinking, and discussing, is to become better readers, writers, and thinkers. The skills we focus on in this class will most definitely help students in other classes, especially English.
