About the Lamar Baseball Staff Coaches’ and Athletic Trainers - Bios Coach Kino Our head coach, Paul Kino is starting his 13th year at Lamar, and serves as head varsity baseball coach and oversees the junior varsity and freshman programs. He coached previously for three years at the Winston School in Dallas, and two years at Cleburne High School. At Sam Houston High School, Kino played varsity baseball and earned AllDistrict honors at shortstop. He graduated in 1993 from East Central University in Oklahoma with a B.S. in Recreation/Education. He and his wife Staci, a sociology teacher at Lamar, are the proud parents of four children: Mackenzie, Emma, Haley, and Alexa. His hobby, is spending time with his girls. Coach Evans Damon Evans is starting his 20th year as a coach. He also serves as a varsity baseball coach and oversees the freshman Offense. He coached the past 5 years at Sanger HS as the Varsity Offensive Coordinator, and has served in that capacity at Arlington Seguin and Anadarko HS (OK) pervious to that. At Anadarko, Coach Evans led Oklahoma in passing yardage in 1987 and earned All-District and All- Area honors as a quarterback. He also lettered 3 years as a varsity pitcher and 3rd baseman earning All-District. He graduated in 1992, from Southwestern Oklahoma State University with a B.S. in Health/Physical Education; and in 1993 from Oklahoma City University, with a M.Ed. He and his wife, Kathy, an elementary school teacher in Sanger, TX, are proud parents of two children: Dane, Sophomore QB at University of Tulsa and Kacee, a sophomore at Sanger HS. His hobby, spending time with his family. Coach Shaffer Paul Shaffer coaches the junior varsity baseball team here at Lamar. He is in his fifteenth year in the district and his fourth year here at Lamar High School. Coach Shaffer graduated from Arlington High School in 1984, and lettered in basketball. He also graduated from the University of Texas at Arlington with a B.A. in Exercise Science. Coach Shaffer began his career in Arlington in 1992 at Shackelford Junior High, then moved to Nichols Junior High School in 1996. He served as the head basketball coach from 1998 to 2006 and the Athletic Coordinator from 2003-2006. He loves traveling, fishing, and golfing when he’s not in the gym or on the field. Coach Shaffer married his lovely bride, Melissa, in July of 2009. Coach Kelly Stephen Kelly is in his first year of coaching. He currently serves as the freshman Offense and Defensive line coach and Freshman Baseball Coach. He lettered 2 years in varsity football at Arlington Seguin while playing under Lamar’s Coach Evens and Coach Reed. While at Seguin he earned All-District honors as any Offensive Lineman. He also lettered 2 years in varsity baseball as an outfielder. He graduated in 2011, from Baylor University in Waco TX, with a B.S. in Secondary Social Studies Education and in 2013 with a M.S. in Sports Management. In the fee time, he works on the Grounds Crew for the Texas Rangers and he enjoys spending time with his chocolate lab, Brazos! Athletic Trainers Kelly Gray, Athletic Trainer Kelly Gray is in her seventh year as an athletic trainer at Lamar and is fully licensed by the state of Texas. She graduated from Sanford Fritch High School, located in the heart of the Texas Panhandle, and pursued an Associate in Physical Education degree at Frank Phillips College. She earned a B.S. in Exercise and Sports Studies from Tarleton State University. Bryant Grice, Athletic Trainer Bryant Grice is from Pensacola, Florida and has a Bachelor’s degree in Athletic Training from the University of Alabama in May 2005. He attended graduate school at Arizona State University. Previously he was an Athletic Trainer in the Austin ISD. He married his wife Brittany in June, 2011.
