Product summary:
Smoke curtain designed to provide a barrier against smoke from a fire.
Product general description:
The Colt Smokemaster SM5 smoke curtain is designed to provide a barrier against smoke produced
in a fire. It prevents the movement of smoke and heat from one area to another in a fire by
channelling or containing the smoke and heat, and functions as an active smoke barrier (ASB). It
operates automatically when connected to a suitable control and power system and when correctly
specified, commissioned and installed.
The smoke curtain has fixing options to suit all types of ceiling configurations and can be integrated
into either a suspended or a solid ceiling. It remains hidden until required and as such it allows
specifiers greater freedom of design when compared to static smoke barriers or curtains.
Comprises a flexible heat resistant fabric which is impervious to smoke and hot gases, wound around
a circular tube and positioned within a compact galvanized steel headbox and bottom bar. Upon
receiving a signal from the fire detection system the curtain automatically unwinds to its operational
position.
Versions available:
- Drive down (D version):
The D version drives down in a controlled manner to a predetermined level upon receipt of a signal,
in accordance with ASB 2/4 of EN 12101-1. It can also be driven down to an intermediate position, for
instance over an escalator, where it is held at that position for some time before descending further.
Fire-rated cabling is required between the control panel and the curtain.
- Gravity fall (G version):
The G version falls under gravity in a controlled manner to a predetermined level in a fire situation or
on loss of power, in accordance with ASB 1/3 of EN 12101-1. Fire-rated cabling is not required
between the control panel and the curtain.
Bottom bar:
A bottom bar comprising two sections of folded 2 mm thick galvanized angles attached to the lower
edge of the curtain material, ensures that the curtain unrolls correctly and stays stable, level, and fully
extended when rolled down, thereby reducing any deflection which might be caused by air currents.
When the curtain is rolled up, the bottom bar provides a clean finish ensuring that it is barely visible.
The bottom bar can be spring loaded in order to accommodate any unevenness in the soffit.
Motor drive unit:
- Drive down (D version):
The 230V AC motor drive unit includes a gearbox assembly and electronics which control the speed
of operation, the switching over of the current to enable the bottom bar to apply a small force on the
ceiling when closing, switching off and motor protection. The unit is pre-wired to reduce on-site
installation time.
- Gravity fall (G version):
The 48V DC motor drive unit includes a gearbox assembly and electronics which control the speed of
operation, overload shutdown, switching over into holding current, switching off and motor protection.
The unit is pre-wired to enable simple 'plug and play', thereby reducing on-site installation time.
Controls and operation:
Sheet

The control system ensures that the curtain stays in place when rolled up. In the event of a mains
power failure, if an uninterruptible power supply (UPS) has been supplied and connected, the curtain
remains retracted using its own dedicated uninterruptible power supply for a predetermined period
(nominally 30 minutes). If signalled to descend during this period, the smoke curtain drops in a
controlled manner to its fire operational position in a fail-safe manner, in accordance with EN 121011.
 Power supply for 24V DC output for direct connection to the fire alarm system.
 Enables a scheme of Smokemaster curtains to be made capable of operation as an integrated
part of a smoke control and fire management scheme.
 A fascia-mounted key switch for manual operation of the connected curtain(s). Can be
connected to a 230V uninterruptible power supply to maintain the curtains in their raised
positions in the event of a temporary interruption to the power supply.
Side guides:
Where there is a likelihood of high air velocities across the curtain when it has been deployed, the
system is equipped with side guides which ensure that the curtain does not deflect significantly.
Applications:
Typical applications for smoke barriers/ curtains are; smoke reservoir boundaries, channelling
screens, void edge screens, void sealing screens, corridor containment, shop unit containment,
escalator containment, stairwell containment, and elevator well containment.
Installation:
The design and dimensioning is carried out according to local constraints and the temperature class
of the system.
Installation is by Colt-certified installers and commissioning engineers working to quality standards in
compliance with the requirements of prCEN/TR 12101-4 and BS 7346-8. The unit is installed using
special brackets either for wall or ceiling mounting.
 Assembly:
All single headbox and single roller units are completely pre-assembled in the factory. Any side
guides ordered are delivered separately. All fixings are provided. Otherwise the unit is supplied in
partially pre-assembled modules for on-site assembly.
Standards:
Conforms to EN 12101-1 and are CE marked. The rigorous testing regime confirms that they will
operate reliably and safely:
A heat exposure test exposing the curtain to 600°C for a minimum of 30 minutes:
 A 1000-cycle reliability test.
 A response time requirement test.
 A speed of descent test.
Manufactured under the ISO 9001 quality standard.
Smoke curtains are available with D120, DH60 or DH120 rating, controlling smoke at either 600°C,
1000°C or 1150°C for a defined period.

Bottom bar:
I: Galvanised steel angle
K: Stainless steel spring in order to accommodate any unevenness in the soffit
Side guides:
 FR: The rollers mounted on the sides of the curtain ensure that it is fixed tightly into the side
guides and so provide additional stability.
 FS: The loops attached to the side of the fabric work together with the vertical 20 mm diameter
guide tubes to hold the fabric tightly within the side guides, and so provide additional stability.
As a result there is minimal air leakage around the edge of the curtain.
Side guides can be designed either for installation into a wall opening, onto a wall opening (face
fixing) or into a recess in the wall to give a flush finish.
