KS3:
In English KS3 pupils will undertake a curriculum geared to prepare them for the new GCSE
courses that they will begin in Year 10. At the end of each half-term pupils will sit a formal
Controlled Assessment in examination conditions, answering a question that either targets
specific reading or writing skills related to the half term’s work.
The following grid highlights the KS3 Scheme of Work. Specific texts will vary from class

English Language (AQA):
Unit 1: Understanding and producing non-fiction texts.
Unit 2: Speaking and Listening
Unit 3: Understanding written and spoken texts and writing creatively.
English Literature (AQA):
Unit 1: Exploring Modern Texts
Unit 2: Poetry Across Time
Unit 3: The significance of Shakespeare and the English literary heritage.
KS5:
KS5 English also uses the AQA board. We provide both English Literature and English Language and
Literature.
English Language and Literature:
In year 12, AS English Language and Literature is 100%, made up of the ELLA1 (50%) and ELLA2 (50%)
papers, which are both 1 ½ hours long: these then covert to make up 50% of the final A Level result.
At A2, ELLA 3 is a 2 ½ hour exam worth 30% of the total A Level, with ELLA 4 being coursework worth
a further 20%.
English Literature:
AS English Literature consists of the LIT1A 2 hour exam worth 60% of the AS-Level and LTA2
coursework, which makes up the remainder of the AS Level at 40% through two essays. These
components then convert to 50% of the overall A Level grade. At A2, LITA4 is the comparative essay
component, which is worth 20% of the A Level with LITA3 2 ½ hour exam making up the remaining
30% of the A Level result.

ELLA 2 – Analysing speech and its representation
A Level English Language and Literature (AQA Specification A):
ELLA3 – Comparative analysis and text production
ELLA 4 – Comparative analysis through independent study.
