ABOUT INJURY PREVENTION AOTEAROA
Injury Prevention Aotearoa was established in 2000 as a national membership based network that
supports and advocates for injury prevention and safety promotion in New Zealand and aims to lead a
collective national voice across the injury prevention sector.
Through national and regional conferences, events, advocacy activities, coalitions / partnerships
and research Injury Prevention Aotearoa supports its membership base, researchers and those
working to reduce the incidence and severity of injury and harm throughout New Zealand.
Injury Prevention Aotearoa is committed to supporting, inspiring or promoting an injury prevention
sector that reduces the incidence and severity of injury that will improve the economic, social and
personal outcomes of all New Zealanders.

Injury Prevention Aotearoa national office is based in Johnsonville, Wellington.
POSITION PURPOSE
To promote increasing the level and visibility of injury prevention activities throughout New
Zealand by supporting community coalitions and networks, developing productive partnerships
between communities and government agencies, and fostering an evidence-based approach to
sustainable investment in programme development and delivery in community safety.
Implementing cultural strategies and services that provide benefits for our communities; address
disparity and inequalities between groups; and adhere to the principles of the Treaty of Waitangi
(participation, partnership, and protection).

•
Implement the Injury Prevention Aotearoa Strategic Plan in collaboration
with the General Manager and team.
•
This role has a leadership focus on the establishment and delivery of
community and cultural strategy and service initiatives and policies that
increase and enhance the capacity and capability of the Injury Prevention
sector and stakeholders to engage in injury prevention plans, policy
developments and practices nationally
•
Work with the General Manager to develop and implement an annual
business plan for Injury Prevention Aotearoa that supports achievement of
the Strategic Plan
•
Report to the Injury Prevention Aotearoa General Manager on progress
against the annual Business Plan, including timing and costs, and the
implications for delivery of the Strategic Plan.

•
Foster and support community groups in developing and delivering injury
prevention initiatives
•
Strengthen the capacity and capability of Māori, Pacific, New Zealand
European and Ethnic (Migrant, Refugee and New Immigrant) communities
to respond effectively to their injury and risk of harm issues
•
Lead the Cultural Advisory Groups from the Injury Prevention Aotearoa
membership, to ensure each cultural strand is meeting the needs of that
targeted audience
•
Support strengthening and leading the Results Based Accountability (RBA)
Workforce training with membership / organisations.
•
Provide leadership in the development, implementation, evaluation and
review of a

Māori Strategy and business plan for the programme of work on
Māori – Whanau Ora

Pacific Strategy and business plan for the programme of work on
Pacific peoples

New Zealand European Strategy and business plan for the
programme of work on New Zealand European communities

Ethnic communities (Migrant, Refugee and New Immigrant) Strategy
and business plan for the programme of work for these communities.
•
Maintain and enhance strong working relationships with the Injury
Prevention Aotearoa Cultural Advisory Groups
•
Develop and maintain strong working relationships with relevant
government ministries and agencies
•
Work alongside the Injury Prevention Aotearoa General Manager to
develop relationships with injury and harm prevention providers e.g.
District Health Boards and the Accident Compensation Corporation.
•
Build positive relationships with key contractors, consultants and
suppliers.
Resource and Financial
Management
•
Manage resources within budget and time constraints ensuring
achievement of Injury Prevention Aotearoa annual objectives and longer
term goals.
Injury Prevention
Leadership
•
Provide leadership for Injury Prevention Aotearoa related to Māori,
Pacific, New Zealand European and Ethic communities, injury and harm
prevention
•
Focus on strengthening operational opportunities to develop policy and
best practice initiatives for injury and harm prevention specifically for
these communities, utilising the knowledge and capabilities of the Injury
Prevention Aotearoa membership and the cultural advisory groups.
•
Ensure that all Work Safe systems are implemented and maintained for
training, injury prevention, accident reporting and injury management.

•
Develop processes to support analysis, provision of information and
preparation of reports
•
Effectively utilise and comply with Injury Prevention Aotearoa’s systems,
processes, delegations and policies to ensure optimum results
•
Assist process improvement with the development of the systems and
processes
•
Comply with Legislative requirements, organisation-wide policies,
processes and codes
•
Undertake other duties as required to assist Injury Prevention Aotearoa in
achieving its business goals.

ESSENTIAL EXPERIENCE AND QUALIFICATIONS
•
A qualification in public health or injury prevention related areas.
•
Experience of public health / injury prevention / community development principles and practice.
•
Experience with effective stakeholder management practice, processes ad techniques.
•
Experienced working in and engaging with bicultural and multicultural environments and working
across a broad spectrum of business and social contexts. A knowledge of Maori and / or Pacific
Island languages and culture would be an advantage.
