right-hand column gives you models of what you should write the day of the test!)
Word/Phrase
1) A stitch in time
saves nine.
2) A blessing in
disguise.
What It Literally Means
Take action as soon as a problem
appears. If you wait for it to get
worse, it will be much harder to deal
with!
An event that seems terrible at the
time… but you realize later that it
actually caused something amazing
to happen in your life.
Example
I’d rather pay the mechanic
$100 to fix the problem now
than to wait for the whole
engine to die and have to
spend $1000. A stitch in time
saves nine.
If our old apartment hadn’t
burned down, our family
would have never moved into
this amazing house. I didn’t
realize it at the time, but it was
a blessing in disguise!
How to Study: Think of your own example (fiction or nonfiction) one or both of the
idioms. Be prepared to explain it the day of the test.
