Olympics of the Arts Westmoreland County Gifted Coalition 2012-2013 **Dates, locations, and availability of events are subject to change.** Event Thinking Games: Language Arts – Rotate through stations playing word games like Quiddler, Boggle, Scrabble, Word Winks, and Cryptograms. Thinking Games: Math – Rotate through stations playing games like Set, 24, Equate, Sudoku, & Runaway Math. Artistic Expression – Express your artistic side by creating a “creepy movie character” sculpture prior to the event and then creating a drawing on the day of the event. Great Debate – Prepare pro and con arguments for an assigned topic then debate following National Forensic League guidelines. Einstein Minds – Use logical thinking skills individually and as a group to solve puzzles. Geography Bowl – Compete to qualify for the National Geography Bee by buzzing in to answer trivia questions on different aspects of geography. Prose, Poetry, Duo Drama – Rehearse and present poems, short readings, and dramatic interpretations. Science Bowl – Buzz in to answer rapid-fire trivia questions on different aspects of science. Invention Convention – Invent a product then create a marketing strategy for it. CSI (Crime Scene Investigation) – Participate in a workshop simulating crime scene investigation activities. Chess Tournament – Test your skills in the “game of kings”. U.S. Events: WWI– Wager points then use a reference book to find answers to questions about the American involvement in WW I. Creative Improv – Work in a group to create and act out a story using given props and situations. Piano Competition – Perform piano selections for a panel of judges. Calcusolve – The faster you solve a complex math problem, the more points you earn. Creative Writing Workshop– Contest participants will receive individualized feedback about their original work of prose or poetry. Quiz Bowl – Buzz in to answer rapidfire trivia questions. Model United Nations – Prepare and present pro and con arguments for resolutions with international impact. Science Study: Anatomy – Compete by wagering points and using reference materials to find answers to anatomy-related questions. Photography – Mail-in photos for judging and then attend a seminar to complete hands-on activities related to photography. Thinkfest – Rotate through six stations that include paper airplane flying, vocabulary play, and architectural design. Propaganda – Participate in a competition designed to test your knowledge of propaganda techniques.
