For Psychology majors without teaching certification but still interested in working
with children in a school setting, all public school systems hire special education
aides, teaching assistants, paraprofessionals, or educational support personnel
(ESPs) to work with their special education students. These jobs are typically fulltime, often with reasonable pay and benefits. Your degree in Psychology is certainly
relevant and ought to make you attractive. Maybe check with the school system you
attended as a student. See also the listing of private special education schools below.
Private Special Ed. (SPED) Schools (may not require teacher certification):
Teacher & other types of positions (for ex., educational/therapeutic/behavioral/support
services) may be available - so be creative & flexible with job titles & positions. There
are many opportunities to work with children with a variety of special needs in these
schools. Your Psychology background should prove both relevant and attractive.
Obviously, if you’re a certified teacher, especially special ed., these schools are quite
relevant although employment with these schools will probably not pay into the State
Teachers Retirement Plan.

Cooperative, publicly-funded agencies furnishing programs & services to public
school districts. Contact each one separately or visit www.CTRESCalliance.org .
