Cornell Notes for Review Lecture: Inquiry Question: What does the research process look like? What components (parts) necessary for research? Academic Vocabulary Research Notes Research question (aka inquiry question) You must have a question that you are trying to answer. This question may need to change as your project goes on. But the question should never be a question that you already know the answer to! Research notes (aka research log) You must take notes while you are researching. They don’t have to be formal, but you should be able to read your own notes afterwards, so take your time. You need to keep track of: 1) What you find out 2) Where you found it (your sources) It’s helpful to use two columns for your research log, like Cornell Notes, so you can keep track of both types of information Source This is where you get information that helps to answer your question. Sources can be: 1) conversations with knowledgeable people 2) paper-based (books, magazines, newspapers) 3) internet-based (where you might also find “online” magazines or newspapers!) In all three categories, sources can be either credible (trustworthy) or unreliable (not trustworthy). You need to avoid unreliable sources. Report When you are looking for answers that you do not already know This is the form where you share what you discovered during your research. It can be oral (presented aloud, to a live audience or recorded as a video) or written (either on paper or digitally). If it’s an oral report, you will want to write lots of notes to prepare your presentation down (and then memorize it!) If it’s a written report, you need to go through the same writing process that you would use for any other kind of writing (the research and your research notes are the prewriting, but then you must draft, revise and proofread as much as necessary). Works Cited MLA This section always goes at the end of your report. (If it’s an oral report, you need to state your sources aloud. Many presenters will write and print a Works Cited paper with just their sources to distribute to the audience or, in a video, will show the source info at the end.) You must give complete credit to all the sources you used. This is one of several “standardized” styles of written research reports. It’s most commonly used in secondary school and even at the university and postgraduate level for the humanities (literature, history, etc.) It has extensive rules for how to format your written report. We will learn the basics this year. The full rules are available online, either through “MLA” or “OWL Purdue MLA” Write 3 sentences about what you learned today: _________________________________________________________________________________________________ _________________________________________________________________________________________________ _________________________________________________________________________________________________ _________________________________________________________________________________________________ _________________________________________________________________________________________________ _________________________________________________________________________________________________ _________________________________________________________________________________________________ Cornell Notes for Review Lecture: Inquiry Question: What does the research process look like?
