Third
Cast (1 Male, 1 Female): GRANT, Andrea
Props: Tube of lip balm.
Setting: The school's roof.
(AT RISE: GRANT and ANDREA are sitting down having a picnic.)
ANDREA: This was such a romantic idea!
GRANT: So you like picnics?
ANDREA: I love picnics! (Laughs.) But I have to say I haven't had too many picnics on a roof!
GRANT: Well, I like to be original.
ANDREA: It's perfect. And look at all the stars!
GRANT: Uh ... I don't see any stars.
ANDREA: I'm pretending. Pretending that it's a warm summer evening and the sky is full of bright,
radiant stars. And the moon is over there, big, round, full, and beautiful! Glowing like never before!
GRANT: Wow. You do have a good imagination.
ANDREA: And I love being the first girl that you brought to the roof. OK, so maybe it's just the roof of
our high school, but still, I feel special!
GRANT: Third.
ANDREA: Forget that we're eating yucky cafeteria food, forget it's only a forty-five-minute lunch hour,
and forget it's not a dark, warm evening with the sky full of stars, but ... but what did you mean? Third?
GRANT: Well, Andrea, you know I don't lie.
ANDREA: I know you don't lie,
GRANT: You've never lied to me.
GRANT: Well, you said you were the first girl I'd brought to the roof, and that's not true. You're the
third.
ANDREA: What? The third? The third? Who? When? Why?
GRANT: Becky, Teresa ... you know.

ANDREA: No, I don't know! I thought us coming up here to the roof during our lunch hour for a picnic
was, was ... you know ... special!
GRANT: It is special!
ANDREA: How can it be special if you've already done it with two other girls?
GRANT: Because I wasn't thinking about the other two girls. You know, if this is ruined because I told
you the truth, then let's just go.
ANDREA: No, I don't want to go!
GRANT: Come on. The bell's going to ring anyway.
ANDREA: No!
GRANT: Why?
ANDREA: I want the truth!
GRANT: I told you the truth.
ANDREA: Why did you bring me up here for a picnic on the roof?
GRANT: I thought it would be fun.
ANDREA: And romantic?
GRANT: Well, yeah.
ANDREA: Like it was romantic with Becky and Teresa?
GRANT: It wasn't that romantic with Becky and Teresa. In fact, they didn't even like it up here. I was
hoping you would be different.
ANDREA: Oh. Oh. (Smiles.) Well, I am different! I do like it. We should do this every day!
GRANT: Come on. Let's go back down.
ANDREA: No, I want to finish our picnic!
GRANT: Come on, Andrea. The bell's going to ring in a few minutes, and we need to sneak down before
we get caught.
ANDREA: No, let's skip all our afternoon classes and stay up here on the roof! That way, I'll be the first
girl you cut class and hid out with on the roof.
GRANT: Third.

ANDREA: And we can finish our picnic and talk and ... What? What do you mean, third?
GRANT: Well, Becky and Teresa both wanted to do the same thing.
ANDREA: They had the same idea as me? But I thought they didn't like the roof.
GRANT: They didn't after spending all afternoon up here. It got boring.
ANDREA: But ... but ...
GRANT: Come on. Let's go back down before the bell rings.
ANDREA: But ... but what if we spent the entire time kissing? That wouldn't be boring! And I could be
the first girl you brought to the roof and kissed as we skipped all our afternoon classes!
GRANT: Third.
ANDREA: And I brought some lip balm. You want some? (Offering him lip balm) What? What do you
mean, third?!
GRANT: I told you, I don't lie.
ANDREA: Well, this is just great! And I thought I was someone special! I thought we were doing
something different!
GRANT: Actually, we are.
ANDREA: What?
GRANT: Not staying, not skipping class, and not kissing. (He smiles. She throws the lip balm at him.)
ANDREA: Next time, try to be more original!
The End
