Rationale: This one-year course is designed for those students who exhibit interest in science, especially chemistry. Topics included are: mathematics of chemistry, safety, laboratory procedures, elements-compounds-mixtures, atomic theory and structure, and organization of the periodic table, mole concept, chemical bonding, nomenclature, chemical equations, stoichiometry, kinetic theory, gases-liquids-solids-solutions, acids-bases-salts, thermochemistry, nuclear chemistry, chemistry of the environment, and career opportunities. Additional topics may include: history of chemistry, biochemistry, qualitative chemistry, and research projects. This course fulfills graduation requirements and qualities for college entrance requirements for laboratory science. First Semester 1st Six Weeks Second Semester 4th Six Weeks Unit 1:Safety / Scientific Process/ /Matter & Change Unit 2:Measurements/Periodic Table of Elements Unit 7: Stoichiometry Unit 8: Solutions 2nd Six Weeks 5th Six Weeks Unit 3:Atomic Structure Unit 4:Nuclear Chemistry Unit 9: Acids & Bases Unit 10: Types of Reactions 3rd Six Weeks 6th Six Weeks Unit 5: Chemical Bonding, VSEPR Unit 6: Balancing Equations & mole concept Unit 11: Gases Unit 12:Thermochemistry B. Classroom Setup: In this classroom, the 5E instructional model will be utilized to maximize your potential. There will be 2 sets of 5 time blocks built into the instructional time equaling about 90 minutes. The following is an example of a typical day in this classroom: Engage - Activity which will focuses student’s attention, stimulates their thinking, generates interest, accesses prior knowledge and frames the setting for learning. Explore-Activity which gives students time to experience, think and investigate, probe, inquire, collect information, question, test, make decisions establishing relationships and understandings, and problem solve. Explain- Activity which allows students to analyze their exploration and communicate new understandings. Students’ understanding is clarified and modified through a reflective activity. Elaborate-In the elaborate activity, students will have similar thinking as they did in the explore activity, however, they are working with a deeper understanding of the lesson’s concepts and usually in a new context. Evaluate- Activity which allows the teacher to assess student performance and/or understandings of concepts, skills, processes, and applications. Student is demonstrating evidence of understanding. C. Materials: Staying organized is a very important life skill that can help you be successful in this class. Thus, it is essential that you have the following materials with you in class each day: -pencil or blue/black pen only (Do not expect the teacher to have one for you.) -5 SUBJECT SPIRAL FOR SCIENTIFIC NOTEBOOK only for this class. This is intended to be your interactive notebook. The first three parts will be for handouts, notes taking ( cornell notes taking format) and explore activities and the remaining two parts will be for vocabulary for instruction, homework and tests. D. Classroom Expectations: In addition to the classroom expectations listed below, you are required to follow all guidelines outlined in the 2014-2015 PSJA Memorial student handbook. If you do not have a copy of the student handbook, you can print one from the school website. 1. Be prepared for instruction by being on time and having the proper supplies. 2. Follow directions. 3. Refrain from talking during class instruction or quiet time. 4. Be respectful of people and property. 5. NO electronic devices in class. (This is a District Rule that will be obeyed.) E. Discipline: Students will be given: 1st Verbal warning and opportunity to correct behavior- “What are you doing?” 2nd Written Warning with Parental contact 3rd Detention afterschool and /or Saturday (level 1 referral) 4th Teachers/student/counselor conference (level 2 referral) 5th parental conference (level 3 referral) 6th Administrative (AP or Principal) Referral F. Grades: It is important for you to understand that I do not give grades; YOU earn your own grades. Your quarter grade will be determined by the following percentages: Projects-10% Exams-40% Quizzes-15% Classwork/Homework-20% Six Week Exam-15% G. Make-up Work: If you miss work due to an excused absence, it is your responsibility to get your missing work turned in. You will have the same number of excused days you were absent to turn in the work. Please check the Assignment Board for the work you have missed. If you have any questions, don’t hesitate to talk to me. -If you miss a test, you may make arrangements with me to stay after school to complete the test. H. Late Work: I expect daily work to be turned into the basket at the end of class that day. If you need extra time, please see me and arrangements can be made; otherwise, late work is better than none. I. Bathroom Passes: Our time is valuable! Please take care of your business before class; only ask for a pass when it is an emergency (emergencies do not occur every day or every week – they are rare). Passes will not be given during the first 10 minutes of class nor the last 10. J. Tips to help you succeed in this class: You are responsible for your own learning. Be on task - complete your assignments everyday, even if it is not assigned as homework. At the end of every Six Weeks your interactive notebook will be graded –maintain it neat, and complete and up-to-date! K. Across The Course Activities a. Organization and Class Preparation - The teacher will advise students during the first week of school regarding the importance of being prepared daily for class. You are expected to actively participate in all class activities. Taking notes, paying attention, answering questions, and class preparation are important to your academic success b. Writing- Students will put into practice writing techniques, which they have developed in their English classes. The teacher will include writing assignments and essay questions on exams, which will be part of the exam grade. Students will write a laboratory report during the course of the year. c. Reading/Learning Strategies/Study Skills - A variety of techniques, such as two column notes, graphic organizers, mind maps, etc., will be modeled and used extensively. d. Problem-Solving Strategies - The process of the scientific method of inquiry will be used as a guideline for solving scientific, as well as everyday, problems.
