Page 1 WHY SHOULD THIS BOARD ADVERTISE THE COASTAL PLAIN REGION OF GEORGIA? BY SARIKA SONI 4AC In my opinion the Coastal Plain region is the best region of Georgia to invest in. The Georgia State Industry and Tourism Board has a very high standard. By advertising this region this board will not be disappointed. It is the perfect way to use the limited budget! It is in my opinion the most beautiful region, and the most important region. The coastal plain region is the largest region of Georgia. It makes up the southern half of Georgia. It is a low flat region of sandy, well drained, gently rolling hills and poorly drained flatlands. The coastal plain goes east and south of the fall line. It is also directly south of the Piedmont region. Some of the wildlife found there are armadillos, deer, wild boar, and rattlesnakes. Many people visit this area every year, as a result it is one of the main advertising points there. It has the most land and it is filled with attractions that people want to visit, therefore making it a large tourist attraction. One of the largest tourist attractions in the Coastal Plain region is the Okefenokee National Wildlife Refuge. It covers more than 700 miles, therefore making it one of the biggest swamps in the south! Not only is it a peaceful place to visit, it is also extremely fun because of its variety of recreational activities. Some of these activities include boat cruises along the swamp’s 400,000 acres of canals, fishing, and hiking, canoeing, and guided nature tours. Doesn’t that sound like fun? Let’s not forget the eight clusters of barrier islands off the coast of Georgia. If Georgia was a crown these islands would surely be the jewels. Of the eight, four are accessible by car. These four are Tybee Page 2 Island, Sea Island, Jekyll Island, and St. Simon Island. These islands protect the mainland and salt marshes from the constant erosion from the wind and waves. These islands are also known as the Golden Isles of Georgia. One of the biggest attractions for visitors to the Golden Isles is the ocean! Some activities consist of fishing, biking, kayaking, tours around the islands, and just plain relaxation. The islands can also host weddings, celebrations, and events that you plan on! These islands are a major point of interest in the coastal plain region. Another place of interest that attracts many visitors to the coastal plain is Providence Canyon. This is the “Little Grand Canyon” of Georgia. Its view is outstandingly breath taking. It has about 1003 acres of land! There are so many things to do in this beautiful natural wonder of the Coastal Plain. Here you can hike, picnic, take pictures, star gaze, and even go climbing. The providence canyon is a network of Gorges created by the erosion of soft, multicolored soils. Erosion exposed the Geologic record of millions of years within its walls, and minerals have stained the sediments, creating a display of colors that range from white to various shades of pink, purple, red, brown, yellow, and black. The providence canyon is also one of the seven wonders of Georgia! One of the most important industries in the Coastal Plain is the agriculture industry. The Coastal Plain region grows many cash crops and exports them around the US! (This is also another major reason why the board should invest in the Coastal Plain.) In this region they grow crops like cotton, peanuts, Vidalia onions, and peaches. The soil is incredibly perfect to grow Vidalia onions, in fact Vidalia onions represent about 40 percent of the total national spring onion production and have an estimated value of about $90 million in annual gross sales. Those are some incredible statistics! Page 3 The natural resources found in the Coastal Plain are outstanding. You can find fresh peaches, peanuts, cotton, turpentine, natural oils, gas, pine forests, grass, wood, and grapefruit! These were just some of the many natural resources found in the Coastal Plain. The climate of the Coastal Plain is mild, with hot summers and cool winters with few hard freezes. Precipitation is high, particularly along the coast, and it is seasonal. Average annual high temperature is about 77 degrees, although highs in the upper 90s are not unusual during the height of summer. Although the Coastal Plain experiences temperatures below freezing each winter, temperatures average in the 50s. There is an average of 51 inches of rain, which comes from both convective thunderstorms in spring and summer and occasional hurricanes in fall. In conclusion, the Coastal Plain region of Georgia is the best region to invest in for the advertisement. This region has so many amazing points of interest, potential industries, and natural resources. This advertisement will definitely be successful if the board invests the budget into the Coastal Plain!
