MEDIA RELEASE MORE HORROR IN TUGGERANONG 21 MAY 2015 Award-winning writer of horror fiction, Kaaron Warren will officially release the newly published version of The Gate Theory - a series of 6 short stories - on Thursday 4 June at the Tuggeranong Arts Centre as part of the Lakeside Literary Lounge series. The series published by Cohesion Press and previously released in electronic form comprising: Purity, That Girl, Dead Sea Fruit, The History Thief, and The Gaze Dogs of Nine Waterfall, will include a brand new short story - The Gate Theory - finished just weeks ago and never seen publically. Warren says she came across the philosophy behind “The Gate Theory of Pain” and knew she had found the title for her collection of stories and the so-titled new work. “We’re all in pain. We try to keep the gates closed by falling in love, travelling, avoiding responsibility, getting drunk, taking drugs… anything to lose ourselves. But the dull ache remains in each of us,” Warren said. The much-loved local author says she wrote the new release in response to the Federal Government’s recent move to close remote Indigenous communities. ‘In the story, the main character, a woman from Canberra, travels to a remote Indigenous communities to help relocate the last few people remaining in the community,. Warren says. In describing the connection to the title, but without giving away how the story ends, Warren said: “Once our character arrives in the closed down community she develops her own ‘gate theory’ – a way of addressing the deep pain endured by the few people remaining in the now desolate community”. Warren’s theory, that ‘if you’re holding the hand of a person when they die, their ghost gets anchored to the earth’ sets the tone for how her ghostly new tale unfolds. Known internationally for her incredible and unique style, Warren has sold over 200 short stories, three novels and five short story collections. In a review of the works, British-Australian author, Alan Baxter describes the series as: ‘‘…. Stretching the boundaries of both storytelling and character. Warren’s is a unique voice in horror. She has an ability to take us to places so utterly disturbing yet simultaneously so mundane and believable; that you start to look at people you meet with a sidelong glance. I call it The Warren Perception. It’s unavoidable. Read her work and you will start to look at people as she does. This is not necessarily a good thing, but it’s fascinating”.
