Position available at Bella Bella Community School Elementary School Counsellor "Our mission is to develop in a just, caring, and respectful environment, students who are independent and life-long learners, incorporating our community traditions and culture with the acquisition of skills needed to succeed in both the traditional and modern worlds". Our School is located in the village of Bella Bella which is situated along the central coast of British Columbia in the midst of the Great Bear Rain forest. The village is surrounded by ocean and forest and an abundance of opportunities for residents to engage in hiking, boating, or fishing. As well, there are multiple opportunities to engage with the rich cultural traditions of the Heiltsuk. Bella Bella is a First Nations community accessible by daily flights from Vancouver’s south terminal and regular ferry service from Port Hardy and Prince Rupert. Although small, many amenities are available: coffee shop, small restaurant, hospital, pharmacy, grocery store, post office, churches, just to mention a few. Bella Bella Community School has approximately 200 students and a full staff from K4 – 12. The graduation rate is approximately 80% with the school being the center of many activities that involve parents in evening and curricular events intended to enhance literacy and numeracy. Other school and community events take place in order to incorporate aspects of the mission statement in order to make learning more relevant to the students of BBCS. The successful candidate must have a Master's degree in Educational Psychology and preferably some experience with counselling in a school environment. Certification in art therapy, expressive therapy, and/or play therapy is a definite asset for this rewarding position which begins no later than Sept 3. 2015. General Requirements The elementary school counsellor provides services directed at helping elementary students experiencing behavioral, emotional, and social difficulty. The counselor assesses and creates individual plans to strengthen self-esteem and to support successful relationships in the classroom. The successful candidate will be able to demonstrate: Training and experience with providing individual and group counseling Training and experience with providing crisis intervention Ability to maintain effective working relationships with children/youth, and colleagues. Highly effective communication and interpersonal skills. Training and/or experience with standardized test interpretation Training and/or experience with conflict resolution Knowledge and awareness of First Nations culture and traditions Knowledge and awareness of effective initiatives and promising practices as they relate to First Nations learners. Willingness to do classroom presentations as required or requested. Willingness to consult with staff, and liaise with external agencies in order to determine appropriate interventions for students and their families or caregivers. Willingness to work in collaboration with the high school counselor. Willingness to work closely with the local community response team Willingness to consult with resource people within and outside the school community on prevention education as well as assessment and planning for individual students. Willingness to perform additional school related duties such as supervision duty and committee work.
