C. James Society. The N. C. James Society is one of 11 donor groups in the 1878 Societies. Nathaniel Chamney James, a professor of modern languages, served as Western’s first President and he is credited by many with keeping the university alive during a period of serious financial crisis in the early years of the 20th century.
