Teacher Tips:

This lesson may be chunked throughout the week. Sections may be done in stations, independent work, group
work, etc.
ENGAGE/CONNECT AND ENGAGE
o



Use the Universal Symbols PowerPoint to build or solidify students’ background knowledge about
symbols. Discuss how symbols are small objects or pictures that mean something. Ask questions such
as:
¿Dónde has visto este símbolo antes?
¿Qué significa este símbolo?
¿Qué otros símbolos has visto antes de que no hemos hablado?
EXPLORE/CONNECT AND ENGAGE
Ask students to hunt for symbols in the classroom (i.e., recycle symbol, restroom sign, exit sign). Create a list
on chart paper as students share their findings. As the list is created, have students identify the beginning
sound in each word before you begin writing it. (You found the restroom sign! /R/ /R/, restroom. What letter
do I need to write first?)
EXPLAIN/MODELED & GUIDED PRACTICE
If students did not identify the flags in the classroom as symbols in the “Explore” portion of the lesson, give them clues
to identify the flags. Explain to students that The American Flag and The Texas Flag are both symbols that represent our
country and state. When we see a flag, we know what country or state it represents!
o
Show the Flags All Around PowerPoint. As you view each slide, have students help identify and fill-in
missing letters and high frequency words. Before filling-in the correct missing letter sound, allow
students to suggest “silly letters” and read the non-sense word that letter creates. (For example, on
slide 2, a student could suggest the letter s, which would result in reading: La sandera en la montaña.)
ELABORATE/GUIDE TO INDEPENDENT PRACTICE
Have students look back at the United States and Texas flags in the classroom to make observations. Students
turn and talk with partners to compare and contrast the flags. (The flags have the same colors, The Texas Flag
has one star and the American Flag has many stars, etc.)
EVALUATE/REFLECT & ASSESS
Students complete MyWorld Student workbook pp 6-7 (P)
