Lesson Plan for Geometry Instructor’s Name: Brooke Odle (Fellow) Teacher’s Name: Maria Sanchez Course Title: Mathematics (Geometry) Unit: 6-1 Topic: Medians Grade Level: 10 Rationale: The lecture will cover medians and centroids of triangles. Instructional Goal(s): The students will learn how to identify and construct medians in triangles. Students will also learn a real world application of medians. Performance Objective: Students will use Algodoo to construct medians in a triangle and will answer practice problems using the CPS Clickers. Lesson Content: Students will: Learn how to identify and construct medians in triangles Learn a real world application of medians Time frame for the Lesson: Time Frame of Activity 15 mins 10 mins 10 mins Activity to be performed Teach students about medians and centroids and go over example problems with them Algodoo activity on constructing medians Classwork: Practice problems with CPS Clickers Note: All times are approximate, and should be revised based upon student progress) Instructional procedures: a. Focusing event –Students will be asked to identify what they think of when they hear the word median and then relate it to a triangle. b. Bridge/ Connections – Students will relate what they learned about bisecting and congruent segments to medians, in that a median is a bisector and the side of the triangle becomes two congruent segments c. Teaching procedures – Students will be asked to recall what they previously learned about congruent segments. Students will learn the definitions of medians and centroids and will be presented with example problems that reinforce the definitions. d. Formative check – Example problems will be presented to the class and students will be asked to recall the definitions of medians and centroids when they share the answers they determined for the example problems. Students will also practice additional problems with the CPS Clickers. e. Student participation- Students will be asked questions collectively and will be called on individually to solve problems. A student will be asked to volunteer to lead the Algodoo activity. f. Interdisciplinary connections – The lesson includes a real world application of medians by teaching students about Einthoven triangles and electrocardiograms. The Algodoo activity is based on the real world application. g. Closure- The lesson will end with the CPS clicker questions, which will test if the students have grasped the material. Students will be asked if they have any additional questions. Evaluation Procedure: Student evaluations will initially occur with the example problems. The CPS clicker questions will also serve as a way of determining whether the students have grasped the material. To stress that the students learn their vocabulary terms, when they volunteer to share the answers to the inclass problems, they will also be asked to explain how they determined the answer. Materials and Aids: The lesson will require a chalkboard and a laptop with Algodoo, Powerpoint, and the CPS software as well as the CPS clickers.
