Pre-Placement Orientation Schedule

In Class sessions are 2 periods long (144 min.)

Pre-placement Orientation: Preparation for placement – personal assessment, getting and
keeping a job, resume writing, interviewing
Teacher responsibilities – setting up placements, assessments of placements, transportation
arrangements

Pre-placement Orientation: Legalities – Health & Safety, Human Rights, Workplace Ethics and
behaviour, Labour Unions
Student interviews with placement employers
Teacher responsibilities – as above continued

Complete Pre-placement Assignments & begin Placement

Placement (4 days) – monitoring visit, direct contact and observation, re: recognition of health
& safety issues, review of accommodations, filling out log sheets & performance of tasks &
responsibilities, interactions with co-workers (P.A. Day on Friday)

Placement (4 days) – In-School Integration Session (Thursday)

Placement (4 days) – monitoring visit, re: assessment of working conditions and of the student’s
work habits, subject teacher visit if possible (Monday – Stat Holiday)

Placement – monitoring visit, re: phone call, e-mail to supervisor – written performance
appraisal 1 due next week for mid-term report cards

Final Week of Placement & Evaluation - final supervisor performance appraisal, debriefing,
Co-op Fair CCA (Thursday), thank you letters, exam day reflection
Placement visits will take place with priority to see students of concern, new placements and placements
requesting early & frequent visits. Visits will include meeting with student and supervisor individually or
together.

Introduction / Welcome, Course Outline, Think-Pair-Share what your expectations are of course
(what you know from other student experiences) – present to class. Application to Coop
Education (Parent & Admin signed). Handouts – Assignment Checklist, Class Discussion: How to
get a job - steps to take, Pair-Share (new partners): Self-introductions - tell each other about
yourselves. Class discussion: what types of information did you share – which of type of
information explains your job/co-op interests – return to discuss co-op placement expectations.
Guidance Counsellor presentation?

Your Background – knowledge & experience, courses, work experience, strengths, interests,
accomplishments, etc – questionnaire, quiz, personal assessments. Written assignment : Dream
Job - summarizing type of job interested in and how you are suited for it.

Computer Lab time: Type up written assignment (72 min period), work with students to help
them reflect on their personal assessments and background to determine type of work that might
suit them
Getting a Job – skill assessment, resume preparation

Approaching a Prospective Employer: Describe yourself and promote your strengths –
questionnaire, paragraph writing, “Wanted” poster with picture, cover letter assignment

Types of interview questions – prepare potential questions, prepare answers, prepare your
questions about the placement.
Teacher skit (2 teachers or teacher & student) – mock interview

Mock Interviews with teachers – including student’s personal placement learning plan. Computer
lab - finish cover letters, search for potential job placements – telephone books, newspapers, online sources, other sources. Prepare list of potential employers and contact information.

School and Employer Placement expectations – prepare a Conduct Contract with expectations
and place for signature. Presentation from a previous Co-op Placement employer - expectations.

Health and Safety – video?. Review of Occupational Health and Safety Act and Workplace Safety
and Insurance Act. Employer and Employee Rights and Responsibilities. Ministry of Education
Work Education Agreement form. Potential hazards – types of injuries. Computer lab: WHIMIS
training. Reporting procedures of accidents and unsafe practices or potential hazards. Firefighter
presentation: use of fire extinguishers. “What if” scenarios or case studies – analyze and discuss.
Group project: Health and Safety Video/Skit (PSA video contest on Workman’s Compensation on
website)

Work period for group project and/or Placement Interviews

Work Ethics – confidentiality, right to privacy, responsible use of technology – on-line ethics,
professionalism, relationships with co-workers & bosses – harassment, human rights, appropriate
behavior, etc. Labour Unions: possible presentation by a union representative? – role, historical
progress, etc. Case study analysis – what is the issue, who’s responsible, consequences &
resolutions, how would you respond in this situation. Student Placement Manual Assignment –
include behavior do’s and don’ts, tips for impressing the employer, Code of Conduct – 10
Commandments, how to handle problems – where to go for help, Rights and Responsibilities list.
Pre-placement test.
Additional days will be added for project time, completion of assignments, visits/interview at
placements.
