What is a “lead?” What are the features of a good lead?
(Handout)Sentences have two parts- a subject and a predicate.
Underline the subject in each sentence. Circle the verb in each
sentence. Using a crayon or highlighter, highlight the complete
subject. In a different color, highlight the complete predicate in each
sentence. (Sentences are pulled from If You Take a Mouse to
School…this text was used in the previous lesson with this class.)
Show Barry Lane video clip #3: Create Unique Sentences
Introduce and make anchor chart for “Ba-da-bing Sentences” (feet,
eye, thought bubble)
Discuss chart for variations: three sentences, two sentences, one
sentence
Fill in missing boxes of chart with new examples for Ba-Da-Bing
sentences.
Rewrite lead sentence from student’s own writing using Ba-Da-bing
format.
Can Ba-Da-Bing Sentences improve your writing? Are there times
when it is better to NOT write in complete sentences? In what types
of writing would this method work best?

Parts of a Sentence

Types of Sentences
Simple: The dog ran.
Compound: The dog ran, and the cat jumped.
Complex: Because the dog ran, the cat jumped.
Compound-Complex: Because the dog ran, the cat jumped, and I screamed.
