Keiser University Celebrates National Nurses Week
Ft. Lauderdale, FL – May 9, 2014 — Each year in May, a week is dedicated to celebrating the
commitment, hard work, and dedication of nurses throughout the nation. This year the American
Nurses Association (ANA) has chosen the theme of “Nurses Leading the Way” for National
Nurses Week May 6-12, 2014. At Keiser University (KU), where sixty-two percent of our
students graduate in STEM and health care fields, we are proud to highlight our nursing
students as their awareness week of activities comes to a close.
According to the Florida Center for Nursing, there are an estimated statewide 9,111 vacant RN
positions, and 4,163 estimated new RN positions to be created in 2014. Statewide, Keiser
University currently has over 960 students enrolled in the Associate of Science or Bachelor’s of
Science nursing degrees and this past year over 400 of our nursing students have graduated
and entered the workforce.
Keiser University values the opportunity to highlight the accomplishments of nursing students
like SSGT Chad McCoy, who is earning his Bachelor of Science degree in Nursing and
maintaining a 3.67gpa, in spite of having been deployed for 10 months. While deployed he
managed a team of 12 soldiers, working 12 hour shifts, six days a week. During his time
overseas, he still completed his assignments for school, regardless of the circumstances. “My
motivation for my success at school and professionally, is my six year old son,” said McCoy.
There is a vast range of vacancies to be filled in the nursing industry, including those in
hospitals. KU has graduates filling positions at assisted living facilities, private practices, and
the wide array of opportunities within hospitals. Daniel Hargrove, a current Bachelor’s of
Science in Nursing student, recently interviewed with Florida Hospital in Orlando. His
qualifications were such that they he was offered two positions within the Intensive Care Unit
(ICU) and Cardiac and Cardio/Vascular unit. Hargrove was interviewed by a panel of six nurses
and ultimately chose the Cardio/Vascular ICU position, where the patients are so critical, the
ratio can be two nurses to one patient.
Keiser University recognizes the tremendous need for nurses and therefore puts a high priority
on the programs we offer to educate these future health care leaders. Faculty strives to develop
critical thinkers who are able to engage in rational inquiry utilizing the nursing process in both
common and critical clinical situations. Hargrove and McCoy are just two examples of
admirable individuals pursuing nursing careers. Keiser University congratulates all of the
talented and selfless individuals who work in this critical and compassionate field of health care
every day to comfort patients and their loved ones in their times of need.
