Environmental Science Ecology Project: YOU MUST COMPLETE ONE OF THE TWO ECOLOGY PROJECT OPTIONS This project will count as a test grade. You can work alone or with one partner to complete this project (no more than 2 students per project). OPTION 1 - CAMPING BROCHURE You are the advertising head for a camping travel company. Your objective is to develop a travel brochure that advertises camping vacations in one of the forest, grassland, or desert biomes. You want to create an attention-grabbing, attractive and informative brochure that will ensure clients will give you their money for an amazing camping adventure! Your brochure can be created by hand or using computer software and printed out. Your brochure must contain the following: Name of your camping company Name of biome that your camping company goes to Name and picture or map of the location that you are advertising (where is it? Which continent, country &/or state?) Climate information: what is the average temperature and rainfall at your location? When is the best time of year to visit your camping location? Name and pictures of at least 2 plants and 2 animals that campers should expect to see. Give a brief description of any interesting adaptations they have. A detailed food web appropriate for that biome, which includes at least one producer, one primary consumer, one secondary consumer, and one decomposer. The organisms in your food web should be identified by name and illustrated. They should also be labeled as “producer”, “consumer” or “decomposer.” Names and pictures of 2 endangered organisms found in that biome and a brief explanation of why they are endangered Written description of at least one environmental threat to that biome (how are humans causing damage to the biome?) Short list of appropriate supplies (~5 items) that campers should bring NOTE: you do not have to go in this order. You can present this information in whatever order or layout you want, as long as it’s readable and organized. OPTION 2- TRAVEL JOURNAL You are about to embark on a 5-day journey to the location (biome) of your choice. You will choose the adventure that most suits you. You may elect a survivor type adventure where you create your own shelter and hunt for food or you may choose to take a luxury vacation. A combination of these choices is your third option. You will be writing a travel journal as if you are visiting one of the forest, grassland or desert biomes. For your journal, you may type it in Microsoft Word or create a PowerPoint presentation; or, you may turn in a hand-written journal (but it must be neatly written). Pictures are mandatory and may be drawn or computer-generated. Each journal entry should be appropriate length (~1/2 page typed; 1 page written). Your Journal should have a cover page with name, title, and travel dates. Entry #1: Explain your first day in your biome. 1) Describe in detail your first day in your biome. Be sure to identify your biome choice. 2) Describe the location of your destination, including a description and pictures of your hotel or camping site location. Also provide a map showing the global location of your biome Entry #2 1) Describe the climate of your destination by including a written description and a graph or chart showing average precipitation and temperature for the year in your chosen biome. 2) List some of the clothes, gear, equipment, etc. that you have brought on your travels to this biome (items should be appropriate for your visit). Or list items that you had to buy during your travels. Entry #3: Explain the relationship among organisms in your location. 1) Provide a name & picture of 1 producer, 1 herbivore, 1 carnivore, & 1 decomposer found in the biome 2) Give 1 example of a plant adaptation (name, picture, and description) and one example of an animal adaptation (name, picture, and description) that can be found in your biome destination. 3) Develop a food chain appropriate for your destination, showing the relationship among organisms in the community. Organisms in your food chain should be labeled & pictured Entry #4 Today you meet a famous conservation biologist 1) Provide a name and picture of 2 endangered species that are found in your biome. 2) Describe at least 2 reasons (threats, environmental damage, limiting factors) that explain the demise of the individuals in these populations. Entry # 5: Your final vacation day is here. As you depart you say goodbye to your new friends. 1)Describe at least one way that your biome destination is threatened by humans and why we should care about protecting it. 2)List three things you enjoyed most.
