Goal Four – Developing Next Gen Leaders - Meeting Notes from 11/25/2015
Goals:
1 - launching a boot camp for aspiring leaders
2 - utilizing the region's retirees and elder population
3 - encourage Latinos, East Africans, and members of neXt to serve
4 - create a formal, community wide mentoring program
Projects group has chose to zero in on:
1 – Mentoring
2 - Informal Leadership Programming
3 – Formal Leadership Programming,
Successes:
1 - We/Lead
2 - 20/40 Leadership
Needs:

– Opening Thoughts:
 Welcome to the many new faces at this month’s meeting!

- Current Work Ideas – 1 Million Cups:
 Discussed what 1 Million Cups looks like:
i. Experiential – Exciting – Open and Welcoming – High Energy – Curating Speakers
ii. Benefits/Outcomes – Buy Local, Create an Environment in which Entrepreneurial spirit is
respected, valued, and encouraged.
iii. Can we incorporate SCORE – Senior Core of Retired Executives.
iv. Connect entrepreneurship supporting organizations such as – SCORE, EDC, WLACC,
Ridgewater College, Heritage Breakfast Club, KCEO
v. Retention of local youth – continuation of KCEO graduates.
vi. Balancing Innovative, Techy, Fresh & New with the Innovation of long standing companies in
the area.
vii. Monthly vs Weekly – The group talked at length and believe the content is there to host a
weekly session, with the ability to possibly integrate other community events to take its
place thru out the year – Please take a look at attached article.
viii. Work Together vs. Silos - “Its not Economic Development any more – its more about
developing the Economy” – Bill Blazer.
ix. How can we pull from other 1MC communities and other entrepreneurs outside of the area.
x. Trip to Yankton, SD may be in the near future.
o Project Endorsement – has been submitted
 They will also be working on the collateral contacts for the 1 Million Cup application.
o Application Community Details - Working Groups  List of Smaller Communities and Populations – Complete
 List of 25 Start Ups with Websites – In process and housed with Connie Schmoll
 How will the 1 Million Cup program benefit this community – Question is being sent out to
both Goal 2 and Goal 4 members.
 Describe the role entrepreneurship has played in this community (past, present, future)Question is being sent out to both Goal 2 and Goal 4 members.


 MinnWest, Work Up, KCEO, EDC, Jennie-O Turkey Store.
 We will definitely need a working group on this one!
Thoughts to think about –
 Coffee Supplier
 Venue – Inclusivity! Is there a potential conflict of interest of proposed venue.
 Experiential vs Just another Meeting.
 Other groups in the area that are similar to 1 Million Cups within the Community.
Goal Chairs will continue to help navigate the application process and we keep the group
updated on where it sits.

- Current Work Ideas – Non – Profit Fair/Networking Event:
 Can we create a welcome home event –
i. Looking toward April 2016 – To Coordinate with Leadership Perspectives, Leadership 2040
and KCEO graduations.
ii. Invite – KCEO, neXt, Leadership 2040, Leadership Perspectives and Blandin Grads.
iii. Bring in Staff and Board Members.
iv. Speed Networking event.
v. How can we define who is invited? – Councils and EDC board included as well?
vi. Speaker that would speak on getting involved, where to start.

 Collaboration with Leadership 2040 Coordinator – Volunteer Data Base.
i. Compile and house a list of graduates from Leadership 2040, Leadership Perspectives, and
Blandin. Non profits would have to request the list. – Can Leadership 2040 house this?
ii. Advertise the United Way’s Non Profit Board.
1. Ask local agencies to promote and update info on the United Way board
2. Can we get a link on the 2040 website to current board?
 Develop/Begin an interest survey from area non profits.
i. Interest and Needs Survey – ask current non-profits to update info.
ii. Ask for job descriptions and expectations of members
iii. Training for Board Members – Ridgewater College – Center for Customized Ed.
1. Create an informational booklet for prospective volunteers.
2. Create an informational booklet for prospective non-profits.
3. Sara and James will connect with Sam Bowen at Ridgewater
