When: March 25 (Tues.) & March 26 (Wed.), 2014 Time: 8:00 – 3:00 p. m. The first session begins promptly at 8:00 a. m. Students must be on-site and ready to begin by no later than 8:00 a.m. We will be meeting at the bleachers inside the barn. Students will be released from the field trip site at 3:00 p. m. both days. How to Dress: Students need to wear long pants (jeans) and close-toed/heeled shoes; boots are recommended (No Uggs or other soft suede shoes). T-shirts and sweatshirts are fine but students should also bring a warm jacket and/or rain jacket. Hats are fine to wear as long as they don’t impair vision. Above all, dress warmly and in layers. We will be outside all day and it will likely be cold. No dangling jewelry. If you have long hair, pull it back away from your face. What to Bring: A lunch and water to drink; a pen to write on lab sheets, a few sheets of paper for notes, and a clip board, if you have one. Behavior Expectation: Vet students (high school and SVC) are expected to conduct themselves in a professional manner while off-campus on school sponsored activities. All Academy rules/regulations apply. Students are expected to be on time. Absolutely no smoking or alcoholic beverages on the premises. Remember to use calm, quiet voices and movements when working with confined animals. S. Pull into the barn driveway and park in designated area. ============================================================================== Horse Handling Session Descriptions Day 1 Session 1 – Stall Skills (Horse Handling) - Cliff -handler safety in a stall (make sure handler is between exit and horse) -importance of making certain gates & doors are secure -haltering (rope, nylon) -lead rope (how to attach, how to hold) -navigating, controlling, and closing the stall gate Session 2 – Grooming/Tying – Samantha G., Helper: Stacey -handler safety in close contact with a horse -safety & hazards when tying a horse (handler and horse); ask client if horse ties comfortably; discuss concerns with horses that pull back when tied or otherwise panic -tying horses to a stationary object (quick-release, dally, tie ring) -grooming procedures (shedding/curry, stiff bristle, soft bristle, mane/tail) -safe lifting of feet (horse & handler; plus OSHA lifting standards) -daily hoof care -hoof soaking Session 3 – Handling Skills I (Catching A Horse) – Cyndi, Skagit Animal Clinic & Helper: Vanessa -handler safety around loose horses -catching/haltering a horse housed in a pen or pasture -handler moving around a horse, including walking behind horse -where to stand when DVM is examining a horse -release with lead -praise -Advanced Group – trot, stop, jog circle Session 4 – Physical Examination/TPR’s – Emily Knopf, DVM, Chuckanut Valley Veterinary Clinic & Helper: Amanda -safe handling of a horse during examination by DVM -T, P, R’s, CRT, and P/E demo. See P/E Form for specifics; students will need to fill out a medical record while performing TPRs and conducting a “well-health” exam -gut sounds -jugular vein – locate, occlude, describe uses (no needle sticks by students, please) -locate IM injection sites; describe how to safely administer an IM injection (no needle sticks by students, please) -If time, signs of colic &/or laminitis Session 5 – Hoof Care/Trimming/Shoeing/Therapeutic Shoeing (Shane Westman) -Shane decides S. Lane, revised 3/22/14 Day 2 Session 6 – Barn/Stall Sanitation Skills/Stable Equipment/Biosecurity on the Farm & in the Large Animal Vet Hospital – Samantha & Helper: Amanda -identify and use: apple picker, pitch fork, muck bucket, feed scoops/scales, grain cans/bags, stall dry, shovel, wheel barrow -types of bedding (advantages/disadvantages of each) -discuss disease control, sanitation practices, contaminated fomites, hand-washing, etc., Focus particularly on handling sick horses or at an event where there are numerous horses from various locations/situations -Stall cleaning (sorting vs. stripping) – students should demonstrate -ethical manure disposal (if time) Session 7 - Equine Nursing Procedures – Dr. Matt Westley (Chuckanut Valley Veterinary Clinic) -safety around horses when conducting nursing procedures; where the handler should stand when the vet is examining the horse -administer oral liquids/meds (applesauce in dose syringe) -wrapping a tail -clip neck for jugular catheter placement and students prep the site (make sure owner is okay w/clipping some hair. -discuss and demo restraint devices (students do not apply these items) -lameness exams Session 8 - Handling Skills II (Horses in Motion) - Cyndi -safety around moving horses -all groups, except Advanced: walk, stop, back, turn -Advanced students: turn forehead, disengage hindquarter, side pass Session 9 - Blanketing Horses/Fly Masks/Fly Control - Vanessa & Stacey -blanketing/un-blanketing: how to do it & why? -fly masks (types, why use, how to put on a horse) -fly spraying technique (how, when, why) Session 10 – Loading/Unloading A Horse from a Trailer - Cliff -discuss and demonstrate safe handling of horses during loading and unloading procedures -demo procedures for loading and unloading horses from a trailer -tips for loading difficult horses -tips for weight distribution in the trailer (single & multiple horses in the trailer) -tips for providing food/water to travelling horses -information about transporting horses long distances; health certificates -trailer safety: safety check list before transporting animals Demonstration 1: Shane Westman, Horse Shoeing Demonstration 2: Cliff Williams, Natural Horsemanship S.
