Job Title: Assistant Named Veterinary Surgeon

Accountable to: Senior Named Veterinary Surgeon
Responsible for: N/A
Job summary:
 Provision of Named Veterinary Surgeon services on behalf of the College to external clients.
 Provision of training and education to students enrolled for the Home Office Licensee and other courses.
Competency: Service Delivery
Key tasks:
 Understand the key roles of a NVS under the A(SP)A 2013 and the provisions of the legislation.
 Visit clients on behalf of the College to provide an excellent professional service.
 Schedule own visits appropriately.
 Work with clients to identify their needs and work towards addressing them.
 Produce clear, concise written reports.
 Demonstrate excellent communication skills with variety of people in order to promote the 3Rs (Replacement,
Reduction, Refinement) and disseminate best practice information effectively.
 Understand the ethical considerations pertaining to research and the animals involved; contribute to Ethical
Review of proposed projects. Contribute to the Animal Welfare and Ethical Review body for RVC and/or clients.
 Working knowledge about the field of biomedical research.
 Provide out of hours cover on a rota basis (currently 1 in 5).
Competency: Behavioural Skills
Key tasks:
 Knowledge of laboratory animal health monitoring in large colonies; common conditions - may include a range of
species, such as rodents, farm animals, small carnivores and aquatic species.
 Demonstrate understanding of treatments, with regard to effect on concurrent studies.
 Commitment to ensuring and promoting excellent animal welfare.
 Use of IT such as Word, Excel, Moodle, purchasing systems.
 Be flexible and adaptable to the requirements of working for several varied clients and/or covering for other vets.
 Be self-reliant; able to schedule and undertake majority of work off-site.
 Be well organised, able to keep accurate clinical and visit records on behalf of clients and College.
 Demonstrate enthusiasm for learning and personal development.
 Work with other vets to ensure consistency of service.
 Assist with provision of holiday cover as required.
 Communicate effectively with other Named Veterinary Surgeons.
 Ability to read complex Licence documents and identify key points for discussion.
Competency: Teaching and Training
Key tasks:
 Deliver lectures, workshops and practical training to students (internal/external) through traditional and elearning formats.
 Good communication in small groups and individual students, who may have English as second language.
 Assist in developing/updating course materials as required.
Flexibility: To deliver services effectively, a degree of flexibility is needed, and the post holder may be required to perform
work not specifically referred to above.
