Main research themes My research area is vascular biology, with special focuses on 1) the arterial response to interventional injury, aka restenosis, 2) mechanisms of neovascularization and 3) molecular imaging of neovascularization. Restenosis develops in arteries treated by percutaneous coronary intervention, nowadays mostly stenting. My interest is mainly to study various stent designs, coatings and therapeutic agents with respect to the healing response of the artery. When an artery completely occludes, the clinical manifestation depends on the ability to recruit collateral arteries. In a large collaborative project, we are identifying set of genes and pathways that are activated in the early phase of collateral recruitment. Some of these genes can be used as therapeutic targets; others may be useful as early diagnostic markers. These diagnostic approaches make use of MRI. As an alternative to classic revascularization, vascular grafts may be used. In Eindhoven, we develop small caliber arteries with patient derived vascular cells that for the first time have physical characteristics that resemble those of native arteries. Histologically however, these arteries are still quite primitive and we are now modifying cellular and extra cellular phenotypes to mimic a natural artery as closely as possible. As a fun project on the side, I am trying to generate consumption meat from bovine stem cells. In August 2013 we presented the world’s first hamburger from stem cells produced in the lab. 12.
