Session Availability: Every year Pre-requisite(s): N/A Co-requisite(s): N/A Expected Number of Students Taking Module (first year): 20 Is This a Cap?: Yes Restriction for Cap: Career Skills for Linguists is a pilot module to be run for the first time in autumn 12/13. Following the pilot, numbers will increase to eventually include a larger number of students from the second year (max 100). Target Students: This module is available to registered full time University of Nottingham undergraduate students only as part of the Nottingham Advantage Award scheme. The module cannot contribute to an academic award programme. This module is aimed at 2nd year undergraduates from the School of Cultures, Languages and Area Studies who are studying a language subject. This leaves good time for them to begin career-related applications at the beginning of their fourth year. Summary of Content and Aims: This module aims to help students to prepare for, and think actively about, using their language skills in their future careers. The module will support students’ personal development and empower them to feel confident and at ease in the job market. The module will also support students to consider development of broader employability attributes. Moreover, it should make them reflect on, and make them aware of, what they need in order to achieve their career goals. Employers, staff from The Careers and Employability Services, and the course convenor, who is the careers contact in the School of Cultures, Languages and Area Studies, will provide support and guidance throughout the module. How to build your own business using your Language skills [2 hours] Workshop looking at the various avenues to building a business using languages. Kerry Johnson and Lea Guetta Guidance and support with regards to assessed interviews and completion of assessed work. Students should also attend where needed a ‘Document Review’ with the Careers and Employability Service Lea Guetta & Careers and Employability Service 06/03/13 13.00 – 15.00 6. Tutorial and Document Review. [2hours] (TBA) 7. Mock interview with employer, including feedback or completion of Be My Interviewer utilising virtual software [2 hours] Coordinated by Lea Guetta 20/03/13 Room B2 & A19 ( TB) Independent study = 40 hours (including research into distinct sectors/professions, making use of The Careers and Employability Services resources, further networking with alumni, engagement with secondary material helpful in preparing all assessed material and for ongoing personal development) Assessment = 40 hours for all activities, including interview preparation. Assessment Details: Assessment Percentage Requirements Coursework 1 50% Part one of the portfolio to include a CV. This should include a skills audit and prospects planner report. To be submitted prior to session two. Coursework 2 50% Part two of the portfolio to include a CV. A reflective portfolio providing evidence of skills and knowledge acquired throughout the module, and outlining an action plan in relation to a future career. To be submitted after session 7.
