OPTICAL DETECTOR SENSOR
WHAT IS AN
O PTICAL D ETECTOR S ENSOR ?
A sensor that uses an infrared emitted diode combined with an infrared phototransistor to detect
the reflected infrared signal. Ideal for sensing black-to-white transitions or to detect nearby
objects (0.5 – 1 cm).
H OW DOES AN O PTICAL D ETECTOR WORK ?
The Optical Detector works by emitting an IR light and sensing how much of it bounces back. An
object closer to it will bounce back more light than one that is far away. Similarly, a lighter coloured
object will reflect more IR light than a darker colour.
This sensor is good for sensing if objects are very close to it, as well as determining if the object is
light or dark in colour. If an array of these is connected, they can be used as a line detection system.
