Some interesting places to visit in Moscow
There is hardly in the world who had never heard about Moscow. A great city,
capital of independent Russia during 850 years of its existence (the city was
founded in 1147 by Yuri Dolgoryki) grew from a small town on the banks of the
calm Moskva river into a giant city with a population of more than 10 million
people.
All the stages of the complex, diverse history of a hug country left their traces in
Moscow’s appearance.
The Kremlin is the heart of Russia. This was the place from which Moscow began
to grow. The Kremlin has always been perceived as a symbol of power and might
of the Russian land, as the national idea, expressed in stone. The Kremlin with its
unique monuments is not only a place which reminds us of the history of Russia,
but it remains the heart of political life of Russian Federation.
The Red Square, located right next to the walls of the Kremlin, used to be the
main trade area of Moscow. The Red Square is famous for the brilliant Cathedral
of Vasily the Blessed. The Cathedral was built by Russian architects Barma and
Postnik. Not far from the Cathedral on the Red Square a place called Lobnoe
Mesto is located. According to a wide spread belief, it was used to carry
executions, however, in reality it was used to proclaim Tsar’s edicts and to hold
various religions ceremonies.
Today Moscow has more than 80 museums. The oldest of them is Oruzheinaya
Palata (Armory Chamber). It was used as a warehouse of the Tsar’s treasures and
today on display are unique specimens of applied art and precious utensils. As far
as the art museums are concerned the biggest one in Russia is the State
Tretyakovskaya gallery, housing the largest collection of Russian art. The biggest
Moscow collection of the Western- European art is on display at the State Pushkin
Museum of Fine Arts. The Museum has expositions of the famous Italian, French,
German artists and etc.
There are different theaters in the capital. Among them the famous Bolshoi
theater, well-known for its excellent acoustics and rich interior decorations. The
best masterpieces of world and Russian classic opera and ballet were performed
on its stage.
Near the Bolshoi theater stands the Maly Theater, built in 1821 by O. Bove and
later rebuilt by C. Ton. The theater traditionally specializes in Russian classics.
Now Moscow becomes even more interesting and more beautiful with its
cathedrals, monasteries-fortresses and preserved boyar’s palaces, new modern
houses, wonderful monuments of architecture, which make Moscow a unique
city, combining the features of both Oriental and Western cultures.
