Press Release
Spheros equips 138 city buses in the Netherlands
Citysphere first choice for QBuzz
Gilching/Utrecht, 02 June 2014 Private transport undertaking QBuzz has
started operating 138 new Euro 6 buses in Utrecht/Netherlands – all of them
fitted with Citysphere compact air conditioning units. For Spheros this was
the first major Citysphere order from the Netherlands.
At the beginning of the year a colourful addition was made to the streets of
Utrecht: local transport operator QBuzz put 138 new bright yellow Evobus Euro 6
city buses into service. When it came to air conditioning, the company opted for
the modular Citysphere unit with its patented air circulation system that
guarantees a low impact on the environment and savings in operating costs. A
total of 558 units have already been delivered – three for each solo bus and five
for each articulated bus, therefrom one Citysphere S for the driver’s section.
Small solution, high efficiency
Comfort requirements for city buses are different to those for tour coaches.
Besides additional consumption, service and maintenance costs should also be
as low as possible. For this reason bus manufacturers are increasingly turning to
the Citysphere with its low life-cycle costs. It cools the interior not by severe
temperature reduction, as is commonly the case, but by a combination of cooling
and air circulation. A radial fan distributes the cooled air directly to the passenger
compartment, ensuring pleasant temperatures without an annoying draught. This
so-called wind chill effect is quite sufficient as air conditioning in moderate climate
zones and a far more effective way of providing a comfortable interior climate in
the city bus. The additional fuel consumption compared to buses without air
conditioning is barely noticeable. Core piece of the modular unit is a hermetically
sealed compressor. Together with the absence of hose lines in the unit, it
contributes to best-possible leak-tightness of the overall system and thus
reduction of its environmental impact.

The driver’s section is separately air conditioned with the Citysphere S split-type
unit. The condenser is located in the vehicle’s standard heating/ventilation unit
and connected to the rooftop unit by two refrigerant hoses. The air is circulated
through the air ducts in the cockpit.
The hermetic sealing concept means that the Citysphere is nearly maintenancefree and provides for hitherto unachieved low life-cycle costs. Furthermore, the
unit is already designed for operation with alternative refrigerants.
