EASTERN MICHIGAN ATHLETICS POINTS OF PRIDE
Jan. 26, 2014
Men’s Basketball (11-8, 3-3 MAC)
Head Coach: Rob Murphy
 The Eastern Michigan University men's basketball team dropped a Mid-American Conference cross-divisional
contest to the MAC East-leading University of Akron, 78-68, in the Convocation Center. With the setback, the
Eagles drop to 11-7 (3-2 MAC), while Akron improves to 12-6 (4-1 MAC). The squad suffered a series of upsand-downs, as Akron came out of the gates with a 10-0 run and increased its scoring margin to as many as 19
points throughout the matchup.
 The Eagles were led by Karrington Ward, who put up 16 of his 20 points in the second half. The junior also
finished with six rebounds, tied with Da'Shonte Riley for the team-high. Riley tied his career-high with seven
blocks, notching all but one in the second 20 minutes of play. Also on the leaderboard offensively were Darell
Combs and Mike Talley who contributed 12 and 10 points, respectively.
 As a team, the Eagles were 26-of-72 from the field for a 36.1 shooting percentage. The squad struggled on the
outside, hitting just 5-of-21 from three-point range. The Green and White also had a lower output in stolen
balls than in previous matchups, as only five steals were recorded for the evening.
 Eastern Michigan University's men's basketball team dropped its second consecutive cross-divisional contest
to Ohio University, 58-56, Jan. 25, in the Convocation Center. Despite leading for all but the final 1:36 of the
contest, the Eagles were unable to hold off the Bobcats in the closing minutes of the afternoon's matchup.
With the setback, the Eagles fall to 11-8 (3-3 MAC), while Ohio advances to 14-5 (4-2 MAC).
 The Eagles were led by Glenn Bryant and Karrington Ward. Bryant tossed in 14 points for the Green and White
and pulled down seven rebounds. Ward notched his third double-double of the 2013-14 season, putting up 13
points and a team-high 10 boards. Da'Shonte Riley led all players with three blocks, while pulling down nine
rebounds.
 As a team, the Eagles shot 19-of-55 for 34.5 percent from the field, well below the 45.8-percent clip they
usually boast within the friendly confines of the Convocation Center. The squad also hit just two shots from
three-point range. Conversely, the Bobcats hit 10 triples en route to their victory, as half their field goals came
from beyond the arc. Ohio was 20-of-60 on the afternoon for a 33.3 shooting percentage. The team also
bested the Eagles in rebounding (45-42), assists (14-10), and steals (8-2).
 The Eagles will remain at home for their next contest, as they host Bowling Green State University
Wednesday, Jan. 29. Tipoff is slated for 7 p.m. inside the Convocation Center

Lauren Feely received a 9.825 from the judges, a mark that ended up being the highest score in the event.
 The Eagles recorded a 48.100 on beam, their final event of the evening. Willette totaled a season-high 9.775 to

Men’s Swimming (6-1, 2-0 MAC)
Head Coach: Peter Linn
 Eastern Michigan University's men's swimming and diving team handily defeated Wayne State University, 180118, Jan. 24 in Jones Natatorium. The Green and White now holds a 5-1 (1-0 MAC) record, while Wayne falls
to 5-2. The Eagles won 10-of-16 events in the evening's dual meet. The number would have stood at 11
victories, but the team had built up such a substantial lead that it swam the entirety of the final event, the 400
freestyle relay, as an exhibition.
 Beating his previously set team season-best times in the backstroke events, Bateman won both the 100 and
200 back for the squad. The freshman finished the 100 back in 50.30, which moves him up to eighth place on
the all-time top-10 performance list. He then followed up with a 1:49.04 victory in the 200 back, which lands
him in the sixth spot for the event. Henry also claimed a pair of victories, as the sophomore led the group of
Eagles that swam to a top-three finish in the 1000 free. Henry finished well ahead of the rest of the swimmers,
winning comfortably in 9:38.17. Marcin Rzyski was runner-up in the race while Sean Tento took third. Finally,
Henry won the 100 free in 45.23, finishing just ahead of runner-up Foos. Foos would go on to win the 50 free,
setting a team season-best performance of 20.74 in the event. The senior finished a shade under half a second
ahead of Ivry, who notched a second-place finish. Three other Eagles claimed individual victories in between
the lane lines, as Mike Fisher won the 200 breast in 2:06.23 and Brian Moore swam a 4:36.17 to take the 500
free, followed by a second-place performance from Rzyski. Senior Aaron Lawson garnered his first victory of
the 2013-14 season in the 100 fly. The diving team continued to shine for the Green and White. Dakoda
Johnson claimed victory on the 1-meter springboard with a score of 281.32, and was barely bested by
teammate Sage Stephens on the 3-meter springboard, as the pair went 1-2 with scores of 309.61 and 308.70.
 Eastern Michigan University's men's swimming and diving team clinched a 65th-consecutive Mid-American
Conference victory with its defeat of Ball State University, Jan. 25. The Eagles took down the Cardinals 163115 in a dual meet that originally featured Ohio State University before the Buckeyes postponed the meet on
account of hazardous weather conditions. Though the Eagles are only listed as having won 10-of-16 events, the
Green and White had built up such a considerable lead that it swam its final five events as exhibition races.
Had the races counted for scoring, the team would have been flawless on the afternoon between the lane
lines, as each race featured an EMU exhibition swimmer touching in before a Ball State competitor.
 Senior Gus Everson led all swimmers in individual victories, as he won both the 50 free and 100 free, finishing
in 21.67 and 46.82, respectively. Two other Eagles claimed victories for the team as Franco Petrone won the
1000 free by a margin of nearly seven seconds and Andrew Henry completed the 200 free in 1:42.34.
 As the Eagles have completed their home schedule, they will hit the road to take on Miami University,
Saturday, Feb. 1 in Oxford, Ohio. The meet is scheduled to begin at 1 p.m. and the Green and White will look
to extend its conference win streak to 66 in its final MAC dual meet of the 2013-14 season.
Women’s Swimming (6-3, 4-1 MAC)
Head Coach: Peter Linn
 Eastern Michigan University women's swimming and diving team wrapped up an evening tilt against Wayne
State University, Jan. 24, with a 176-122 victory. The Eagles now boast a 7-2 (3-1 MAC) dual record, while the
Warriors now sit at 5-2. The Green and White won 8-of-16 events in Jones Natatorium, but its win was secured
well before the closing of the meet.
 Half of the team's victories came from freestyle events, as Van Allen claimed wins in both the 200 and 500.
The freshman swam the 200 free in a time of 1:53.25, while Jackson followed up with the second-place finish.
Van Allen then took the 500 free in 5:09.24 as teammates Allison Murslack and Audra Burtch rounded out a 12-3 sweep in the event. In the diving events completed earlier in the afternoon, Danielle Hulvey won both the
1- and 3-meter springboard competitions. Hulvey scored over 300 points in each event, as she notched a
317.33 on the 3-meter board and a 349.13 on the 1-meter board. The Eagles enjoyed a 1-2-3 finish on the 3meter springboard as Karly Taylor took second and Lauren Dark was the third-place diver.

Eastern Michigan University's women's swimming and diving team took down Mid-American Conference foe
Ball State University, 185-112, Jan. 25 in Jones Natatorium. The Green and White had originally scheduled to
dual against Ohio State University in Saturday's meet, but the competition had to be postponed on account of
inclement weather.
The Eagles won 11-of-16 events in the afternoon's matchup, all of which came by way of individual victory.
Leading the way for the squad was Monica Dorszewski, who not only claimed two victories but also set careerbest and team season-best times in both the 100 and 200 breast. The junior barely surpassed her previous
personal record in the 100 breast, clocking in at 1:03.90, which places her in the seventh spot on the EMU alltime top-10 performance list. She then swam a 2:18.46 in the 200 breast, good for the eighth spot in the top10 for the event.
Two more victories came to the Eagles, as Jessie Godlewski led Jackie Swartz and Jackson to a 1-2-3 sweep of
the 200 fly, and Swartz went on to win the 200 IM with a 2:10.54 mark.
Since the Eagles had amassed enough points to clinch the win over the Cardinals, they swam their final event,
the 400 freestyle relay, as an exhibition. Had the score been counted in competition, the team of Detro, Van
Allen, Godlewski, and Sierra Wagner would have claimed a final victory for the Green and White. Their time of
3:32.25 was just a hair faster than BSU's A-Team's 3:32.68 finish.
The team has completed its home schedule for the 2013-14 season, but it has not finished dual meet
competition. The Eagles will travel to Oxford, Ohio next week to take on Miami University, Saturday, Feb. 1 at
1 p.m. The meet will be the final MAC dual meet of the current campaign, and the team looks to build to a
three-MAC win streak before the season comes to a close.

Conference this season as the league office announced the 2014 MAC Women's Tennis Preseason Coaches'

the MAC Tournament championship, receiving 68 votes. Last season, Miami won its fifth consecutive MAC
regular season title and the program's third overall MAC Tournament title as the No. 1 seeded RedHawks
defeated No. 2 seed Bowling Green, 4-3.
 The Eastern Michigan University women's tennis team opened their home schedule with an easy 7-0 victory
versus the Butler University Bulldogs at the Chippewa Racquet Club, Jan. 24. To begin the dual match, Nino
Mebuke and Klara Supejova began things off on a winning note with a 6-1 victory at the No. 1-doubles spot.
The duo won the first game, before letting Butler tie things up at one apiece. Mebuke and Supejova then went
on a tear, ripping off five straight to take the 6-1 decision. Zsofia Biro and Mariya Toncheva gave Eastern the
doubles point with a 6-1 decision of their own at No. 3-doubles. Diana Davitaia and Maria Paula Ribero took on
the final doubles matchup at No. 2. The pair gave the Eagles a sweep in doubles action with a 6-2 win. Moving
on to singles, the Eagles' dominant play did not diminish. The Green and White did not drop a set in singles
play, while sweeping all six to a quick 7-0 win. The quickest to finish in singles was Mebuke, making quick work
of Angelina Qin, 6-1, 6-1. Toncheva dispatched Jocelyn Koester, 6-0, 6-1 with haste as well in her No. 4-singles
matchup to give the Eagles an early 3-0 lead.
