INSIDE:
Welcome!
Welcome to our September-December season of events. We have another fabulous
season in store of stunning art and heritage exhibitions, theatre, music, comedy, film
and creative learning. It is a busy time of year with our Halloween and Christmas events
but also significant, as October marks our first anniversary! Having officially opened our
doors last October 29th, in the past year we have provided the very best of arts and
cultural events for residents of the borough and visitors from further afield. To mark the
occasion, we have some special activities during October, including the return of
Clydebuilt Puppet Theatre who were the first company to grace our Auditorium and the
reintroduction of old town hall tea dances.
In November we are also pleased to present some activities celebrating our borough’s
connection with Nobel prize winning author John Steinbeck. Steinbeck’s maternal
grandfather, Samuel Hamilton, was from Mulkeraugh outside Ballykelly and emigrated
to New York in 1847. Fascinated by his Irish roots, Steinbeck travelled to the area in
1952, visiting his family graves and documenting the trip for an article I Go Back to
Ireland, published in Collier’s Magazine. His acclaimed novel East of Eden was
published in the same year and indeed, the major character of Samuel Hamilton was
inspired by and based upon his Ballykelly born grandfather. East of Eden was adapted
as a film released in 1955 and starred James Dean in his first cinematic role. We hope
to further expand on this festival in future years.
As always, the team look forward to welcoming you over the forthcoming season and
thank you for your continued support.

EXHIBITIONS
Once Upon a Time
1-30 September
Broighter & Keady Galleries
We are delighted to present this wonderful exhibition celebrating the art of illustration.
After launching an open submission in early 2011, we selected five artists - Sheena
Dempsey (London), Killian Dunne (Dublin), Ciara Healy (Wales), Shona Macdonald
(Cork) and Caitríona Sweeney (Dublin). Representing creative connections throughout
the UK and Ireland, the exhibiting artists aptly reflect the diversity and potency of
contemporary illustration. From work devised for published children’s literature to
graphic novels and fine art, the exhibition not only reveals this multiplicity of the
illustrator’s craft but also its essence – narrative. Illustrations weave stories in and out of
our imagination, leaving a lasting imprint on us, whether child or adult. We hope you
enjoy this exhibition, purposely curated to appeal to the child in us all. Sit, relax and let
the stories unfold…..
Please see our Cool for Schools section for accompanying activities.

Photographs from the Second World War
2-30 September
Ritter Gallery
This exhibition provides a unique insight into the role that both people and animals
played during the Second World War using images from the Imperial War Museum
Collections. Life in the RAF and Royal Navy is reflected via photographs of squadrons
both at work and during their leisure time. Photographs of animals, meanwhile,
underline the intriguing and often surprising stories of their involvement in the war; from
carrier pigeons tracing missing RAF airmen to dogs locating buried mines. Women’s
contributions to the war effort are also highlighted; with photographs of the Women’s
Land Army, the Women’s Auxiliary Air Force and the Women’s Royal Naval Service in
action.
Produced in conjunction with the Causeway Museum Service. Limavady Borough
Council is a partner in Causeway Museum Service.
Tours of the exhibition are available to schools and community groups by prior arrangement
with the Museum/Heritage Officer. Please contact us on Tel: 028 777 60650 for further details.

material donated to Limavady’s museum collection by the Bunn family (via Mrs. P.
Buchanan) and Mrs. E. Witherspoon, the exhibition looks at the classroom and how it
has changed, the impact of exams and the resulting pressure on pupils. It also explores
both the positive and negative sides of school life by examining friendship, sports and
games.

Council is a partner in Causeway Museum Service.
Tours of the exhibition and learning resources are available to school groups by prior

prior to demolition and the centre as it is today, the exhibition provides a stark contrast
between old and new.

Way Out Where
Jenny Fox & Josephine Kelly
4 November – 23 December
Broighter & Keady Galleries
This exhibition unites two painters who capture the beauty and starkness of place.
Jenny Fox’s work draws from vast empty spaces which were once inhabited but now
dilapidated. Utilising an evolving process combining plaster, sawdust and oil paint, she
creates layered works which convey an atmospheric and organic aesthetic. Born in
Canada, Jenny was brought up in Dublin and Mayo and now lives in County Tipperary.
A graduate of the National College of Art and Design, her work is represented in several
public collections as well as private collections in Ireland, Australia, Canada and the
USA.
Josephine Kelly lives and works in her native Buncrana. Her sumptuous landscapes dig
deep to reveal tangents of den, nook and hillside which would be ordinarily overlooked.
With depth of colour and a fluidity of brushstroke, Joe portrays gentleness in creating
semi-abstracted scenes from Buncrana and Inishowen. She graduated from the
University of Ulster, Belfast in 1997 and has since exhibited extensively in Ireland and
also in London and Paris. Her work is included in many public collections as well as
private.

Drumcovitt
17 November – 18 February
Ritter Gallery
This exhibition features items relating to Drumcovitt, a large house and estate located
just outside Feeny. The house was built over 300 years ago on land owned by the
Fishmongers Company. The exhibition focuses on a specific period of the house’s
history, from the mid 1800s to the late 1900s, when it was under the ownership of Mr.
S.G.M. Craig. The items on display include rental receipts, rates books and letters all of
which relate to the estate and surrounding area. The exhibition will also include a
display of photographs taken in the 1930s during a busy and important stage of
Drumcovitt’s development when the land around the house was actively used for
farming.

Nashville’s finest musicians like Ron Block (of AKUS) and Tim O’Brien, all in a studio on

A young newspaper writer returns to her home town in the English countryside where
her childhood home is being prepped for sale. Ugly duckling to swan story, Tamara
Drew was adapted from the graphic novel of the same name, which in turn was loosely
inspired by Thomas Hardy’s Far From the Madding Crowd. Described as the very model
of a modern British film, it is directed by Stephen Frears and is a bright and amusing
ensemble comedy.
I surrendered midway through to the film, to the wayward torque of its plot and the near-perfect
pitch of its acting ensemble – Richard Corliss, TIME Magazine

The Man Who Left the Titanic
Thursday 27 October, 8pm
On April 15th 1912, the Titanic, the greatest ship in the world, slipped below the frigid
waters of the Atlantic. Yet J. Bruce Ismay, managing Director of the White Star Line,
stepped into a lifeboat and sailed away from the stricken ship, sailed away from his
passengers, sailed away from the cries and screams and tears. This production evokes
that terrible voyage and asks whether Ismay only did what any of us might have done in
the same circumstances, or should his actions that night consign his name to infamy?
Was he a coward, or merely human?
A new play by Patrick Prior, performed by Pat Abernathy and Dave Marsden. Directed
by Jim Dunk.

and featuring cinematic greats such as Vincent Price, Bella Lugosi, Boris Karloff and
Basil Rathbone. Both stories are modernised by Wireless Mystery Theatre to the 1940s.

published in 1937. Starring Sinise alongside John Malkovich, the film remains loyal to
the novel’s plot which follows the paths of two migrant field workers, George Milton and
Lennie Small, in California during the Great Depression. The two friends dream of a
better life, only for the reality of a sequence of tragic events to intervene. Aptly,
Steinbeck took the title from Robert Burns' poem To a Mouse, which read "The best laid
