The Animal Resource Center (ARC) at the University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center (UT
Southwestern) invites applications for the position of Training Specialist. The ARC is a large service unit
that provides animal husbandry, investigator support and veterinary care to the research programs on
campus. The animal care program at UT Southwestern is AAALAC International accredited, and
encompasses approximately 215,000 sq. ft. and houses a variety of species but predominantly rodents.
The ARC is divided into five distinct units, a diagnostic laboratory, a veterinary pharmacy, an operations
section, a husbandry section and the administrative office. This position is responsible for leadership of
the departmental training program and is an integral part of the departmental educational programs.
Job responsibilities include assisting the ARC Associate Director in the development and administration
of in-service training and educational programs to meet the growing needs of the department; providing
leadership, direction and oversight to the departmental training program; developing and implementing
departmental policies and procedures relating to training activities. Specifically this position oversees
training of new hires, departmental safety, SOP and technical training; supervises training coordinators
in the implementation and administration of the training program; assist in development and
maintenance of a database tracking all training received by departmental staff members. The position
reports to the Associate Director of the Animal Resource Center.
The candidate must possess a BS degree in a related field and 3 years of experience in the development
and use of training methods, techniques, and materials. LATG certification or successful completion of
the examination required within 1 year of employment.
