Tournament Format:
1. Coaches Orientation – 12:00 pm on Wednesday in the LLC Building A Conference
Room.
a. Practice times: If desired, you may sign up for a practice time with the USU
Coaches. There will be 1 hr practice slots available for JV teams on Thursday
and Friday evenings during Varsity pool play. There will be 1 hr practice slots
available for the Varsity teams on Wednesday afternoon, and Thursday and
Friday mornings during JV pool play.
b. Coaches Chalk Talk: All coaches are invited to a coach’s chalk talk in the
Wayne Estes VB Team Room with Head Coach Grayson DuBose during
dinner on Friday from 5:00–6:00 pm. Pizza will be served. Please sign up
during orientation if you will be attending.
c. Varsity Pool Play: One pool of Varsity teams will be playing in the morning.
Please check your schedules.
d. Contact information: You will be asked to provide an email address or cell
phone number which will be used to send your schedule for Friday and
Saturday. JV results will be sent by 8:00 pm Thursday and Friday. Varsity
results from Wed/Thurs pool play will be sent by 11:00pm Thursday and
Friday.
e. Scorecards: A coach from each team will be required to initial the scorecard
following each match.
f. Questions: Coordinator, Robbie Gerber, and Coach Neves-Palmer will be
available to answer any questions. You will also be updated with any schedule
changes.
2. Welcome – At 12:45 pm in the Wayne Estes Center gym there will be a short
welcome for all teams/coaches. The teams will then make their way to the gyms to
start their pool play.
3. Jerseys – We will not be keeping track of substitutions or lineups. Numbers or
jerseys are not required.
4. Volleyballs – We will provide 15 volleyballs on each of the courts for warm-ups.
Please make sure there are 15 volleyballs in the cart when you are done warming up.
5. Warm-ups – You will be given a total of 10 minutes for warm-ups before each
match. Each team will receive 5 minutes of court time to hit, serve etc. If your team is
already warm, you can decline your warm-up time.
6. Referees – We will provide one up ref for each game. If your team is assigned to ref,
you will be asked to provide a score keeper, a score flipper, and two line judges for
each set.
7. Pool Play – Pool play will be 2 sets to 25 – with a scoring cap at 25.
Wednesday and Thursday pool results (win/loss, points scored per game, points
allowed per game) will be used to place teams in 5 pools - each with teams of similar
records - for Friday pool play competition: Varsity Gold A, Varsity Gold B, Varsity
Gold/Silver, Varsity Silver A, Varsity Silver B, JV Gold, and JV Silver). Friday pool
play (win/loss, points scored per game, points allowed per game) will determine
seeding for Saturday’s tournaments (Varsity Gold, Varsity Silver, JV Gold, and JV
Silver).
7. Tournament Play – The tournaments will be divided into Gold and Silver Divisions.
Varsity Gold Division will include the top 10 varsity teams. Varsity Silver Division
will include the lower 10 varsity teams. JV Gold Division will include the top 6 JV
teams. JV Silver Division will include lower 7 JV teams. Best of 3 sets will be
played. The first two sets to 25 and a third set to 15 if needed. You must win by two
with no scoring cap.
8. Adjustments – We will start the warm-up for the next match as soon as possible after
the match before concludes. Therefore, matches might not follow the exact hourly
schedule. Please be aware of that possibility and be early for your match time.
9. Other activities – Optional fun activities to do in Logan :
a. Hike in Logan canyon (wind caves, crimson trail)
b. Visit the Aggie Ice Cream shop for some famous Aggie Ice Cream
c. Canoeing at 1st Dam (work with the Outdoor Rec Program) – or feeding the
ducks at 1st Dam
d. Mini-golf at Willows Golf Park in Providence
e. Go Carts at Renegade Sports in Logan
f. Logan Aquatic Center
g. Cache Valley Fun Park (bowling, arcade, laser gun)
h. Logan Lanes (bowling)
i. Movie Theaters
j. Take a walk through historic downtown Logan
k. Tour Utah State University Campus (can be guided by current VB athletes)
l. Visit Willow Park Zoo (they have an albino porcupine!! )
