Composition & Conversation II 英文作文 & 英語會話(二) Tuesday 1:40pm – 4:30pm Location: LA 204 Dr. Donna Tong Email: 080695@mail.fju.edu.tw Office: SF225 Office Hours: Wednesday 1-5pm Course Description The purpose of this course is to prepare students for upper level research and writing, to demonstrate and emphasize analytical thinking, and to teach critical engagement with course materials, all skills necessary for success in all students’ coursework. In this course, for the composition component students will focus on three modes of writing, with each one building a foundation for the next one. This course will cover MLA style which serves as a necessary facet of academic writing and research. Students will learn how to summarize, paraphrase, and quote with proper citation and attribution, as well as the process and techniques of researching a specific topic (to be selected by the student with approval of the instructor). These skills will prepare students to learn the aspects of and how to revise their synthesis final exam from Fall semester, an extended definition essay, and a research report. Students will be given opportunities to further their understanding of spoken English, including various speaking situations, registers of speech, and professional modes of speaking in order to strengthen not only their understanding of but also their ability in English conversation. Students will be assessed based upon their participation in class discussions and their assigned, formal presentations. Be advised that the class will be conducted solely in English.
