UCT’s internal process
There is no UCT internal closing date as UCT is not required to centrally endorse the
application or perform the submission for the applicant (so please ensure that you, as the
applicant, submit the application directly to the Newton Fund). However, a budget is
required so please ensure that you obtain approval of the budget from the concerned
faculty's finance manager (for Faculty of Health Sciences this requires completion of the C1,
FHS002, form).
Please also ensure that you send a copy of the application (please save either from the
funder’s submission system, if it allows, OR ensure that you retain an electronic copy of the
application offline) to RCIPs via email to maghmuda.ockards@uct.ac.za within five days after
application submission.
About the Newton Fund
The UK National Academies (the Royal Society, the British Academy, and the Academy of
Medical Sciences) in collaboration with South Africa’s National Research Foundation (NRF)
have established new opportunities for the exchange of researchers between the UK and
South Africa under the auspices of the Newton Fund. The Newton Fund is a new initiative
that aims to develop the long-term sustainable growth and welfare of partner countries
through building research and innovation capacity, and forms part of the UK’s Official
Development Assistance commitment. The UK National Academies and the NRF have
agreed to establish a five year programme, which aims to develop research and innovation
partnerships to support the development of a well-trained research community, and
establish long-term and sustainable links between the best researchers in the UK and South
Africa. During the next five years, the following programmes will be offered to researchers
in South Africa:

Newton International Fellowships: for early career post-doctoral researchers in South
Africa to spend two consecutive years undertaking research and training at a university
or research institution in the UK.


Newton Advanced Fellowships: for early to mid-career researchers based in South
Africa to develop their research strengths through training and collaboration with a
partner in the UK.
Newton Mobility Grants: mobility grants for South African researchers and their UK
counterparts. The grant will provide opportunities for South African researchers and
establish and develop collaborations between South Africa and the UK.
