Thesis Advisory Committee :
Evaluation presentation research project
The Thesis Advisory Committee, including promoter and copromoters, evaluates the presentation and
the research project in general taking into account all aspects relevant for the doctorate (e.g.
provisional doctoral plan, scientific attitude, knowledge of literature, scientific quality of already
performed research, language and communication skills, etc.…).
Decision :
1.
Approval
The doctoral training can be continued.
The Thesis Advisory Committee is free to formulate suggestions for improvement in a separate
report (annex 1). These recommendations can be on an obligatory or optional basis.
2.
Insufficient quality (compulsory to list objections in a separate report, annex 1)
The chair of the doctoral committee will contact the PhD student and will present him/her two
options:
a. The PhD student agrees with the negative evaluation which results in a termination of the
PhD.
b. The PhD student does not agree. He/she is given a second chance and may organise
a second evaluation up to two weeks before the end of his/her personnel contract. The jury
members stay the same with the addition of a doctoral committee member selected by the
Doctoral School of Biomedical Sciences. If the evaluation remains negative, the PhD will
be terminated. In case the PhD student does not agree with this decision, the appeal
procedure (University Regulations, article 24) comes into force.

Skills
PhD students have access to a wide range of transferable skills training within the doctoral
programme. In addition to research skills, these skills (interpersonal skills, communication skills,
career management, …) will enhance personal effectiveness and future employability, whether in or
out of academia. The doctoral school wants to emphasize the importance of acquiring these skills
during the doctorate. Therefore this evaluation moment should give the PhD student, (co)promoter
and Thesis Advisory Committee the opportunity to think about and write down the skills that need
extra focus or could be useful for his/her future career. It is recommended to suggest two or more
courses. In the skills calendar it can be verified if there are workshops on offer to help develop these
competences. Annex 2 gives an overview of the different topics.
