strong commitment by each of us to make improvements every day of the season. I’m
confident that we are up to the task, and by the season’s end we shall have numerous
accomplishments to celebrate.
The attached handbook provides important information concerning the Kamiak wrestling
program. Please take the time to thoroughly read this handbook, and return all eligibility

Kamiak High School Wrestling Team
Training rules & operational guidelines
Sportsmanship: aside from the health, safety and education of our student-athletes, the primary focus of this
coaching staff is to develop character traits, which will benefit our student-athletes throughout their lives. We
regard good sportsmanship as a vital part of our program. Our athletes are taught from the first day of practice
that their actions reflect not only upon themselves, but also their team, school, family, and community.
Sportsmanship at matches and tournaments is imperative. Wrestlers need to help set up for the contest and need
to abide by contest rules by staying in their assigned area and supporting the team until the entire contest is
over. At tournaments, all wrestlers will remain in the stands unless they are called to a mat for staging as per
tournament guidelines and etiquette. No wrestlers will coach other wrestlers unless asked by a Kamiak Coach.
Failure to abide by published contest rules will result in a team penalty. Following a match or tournament, all
wrestlers are expected to help clean up and roll up mats at home and away contests. “We will leave the place
better for having been there.”
The Kamiak wrestling program is widely known as a first class organization. We have received numerous
compliments in the past from fans, coaches, referees and school officials on the way our team members conduct
themselves both on and off the mat. We as coaches commit to do everything in our power to continue this
tradition.
Eligibility: enclosed in this packet you will find a copy of the Mukilteo school district parent / student guide for
athletics (blue booklet) and the high school athletic eligibility information bulletin. Pages 9 thru 11 of the guide
provide the basic rules and regulations pertaining to eligibility for students participating in interscholastic
activities. The bulletin provides further clarification of the basic rules and regulations.
Making the team: all eligible students who turn out for the team, regularly attend practices and follow team
rules will be regarded as important members of the team. We on the coaching staff are proud of the fact that we
have never “cut” an eligible and willing athlete from the Knights wrestling team. We fully intend to continue
this practice so long as we have the facilities to adequately accommodate all who turn out. However we will not
hesitate to dismiss athletes who habitually miss practice and/or violate team rules.
The varsity lineup shall be determined through a series of challenge matches. Each wrestler shall establish the
weight class he wants to compete at and all wrestlers at that weight will wrestle head to head matches until the
champion is determined. The champion of each weight class shall be the varsity wrestler at that weight class.
Additional challenge matches will be held periodically throughout the season. The coaching staff reserves the
right to make adjustments to the varsity lineup for disciplinary or other reasons.
Attendance: we expect all wrestlers to attend ALL practices. If a wrestler has an unexcused absence (did not
personally contact the coach), he/she will NOT wrestle in the next competition and will lose position in varsity
line-up until a new challenge match takes place. This applies to tournaments as well as dual meets. Attendance
will be taken daily. Athletes are expected to be suited up and be ready for warm-ups by the time practice starts.
If students are staying after school for classroom help we ask that they personally notify one of the coaches. A
student must be in school a full day to be eligible for a practice or match. If the athlete becomes ill or cannot
make practice or match, he is expected to personally contact Coach Stelling as soon as possible. If absent due to
an emergency, a note from your parents must be provided.
Transportation: transportation to some away matches may be provided by the school district—most trips will
be one way only—parents need to be involved in making sure their wrester(s) have transportation home from
the match—no bus transportation will be provided to close matches like Mariner High School.
Uniforms & equipment: The school provides all wrestling uniforms. Wrestlers are responsible for all
equipment that is checked out to them and must return the exact same equipment by number in good
condition. At the conclusion of the season, each wrestler should turn in gear inside a bag (equipment
bag) with their name on a piece of paper inside. Please do not modify any uniforms, and please follow all
cleaning directions attached to each garment. School uniforms and equipment are to be used for school purposes
only.
Injury, Health and safety issues: wrestling is by its nature a high-risk activity involving many risks of injury.
Guidelines and practices have been establishes which are designs to protect against injury. Included in the
packet of materials is a copy of the wrestling safety guidelines form. Athletes and parents must sign and return
this form before the first day of practice.
There has been a great amount of concern in his sport of wrestling regarding skin infections. We at Kamiak are
very much aware of the problem, and have adopted several measures to designed to reduce the possibility of
infection, which include:





Wrestling mats are mopped with germicide prior to every practice / meet
Periodic inspection of athletes
Insistence upon showering with soap immediately after practice / meets
Insistence upon athletes wearing laundered apparel at practice / meets
Use of antibacterial foam such as KEN-SHIELD on skin
Through these measures, we have been very successful in keeping the incidence of infection to a minimum. We
will continue to be very vigilant in this arena.
Questions and Concerns: we want to establish good lines of communication between the coaching staff and
the athletes and parents. Page 8 of the Mukilteo school district parent / student guide for athletics (blue booklet)
contains guidelines as how we wish to maintain these lines of communication. If you have any questions or
concerns regarding the wrestling program, please bring them to the attention of the coaching staff at your
earliest convenience.
Drug, Alcohol, and tobacco Policy: the Mukilteo school district holds the following as grounds for denial of
participation and or dismissal from do-curricular and extra-curricular activities:



Illegal consumption, possession, or sale of alcoholic beverages
Illegal consumption, possession, or sale of drugs or narcotics
Illegal use of tobacco
Included in this packet of materials is a copy of the Co/Extra curricular Drugs, Alcohol and tobacco eligibility
form. Athletes and parents must sign and return this form before the accumulated day of practice.

may be accumulated in a single year or be amassed over 4 years. Points are accumulated as follows.

High School Athletic Eligibility Information Bulletin
The athletic eligibility bulletin is intended for the athletes. The basic rules and regulations governing in the
sports program of the Mukilteo school district.
STUDENT RIGHTS
Students participating in the interscholastic athletic program are governed by the rights, protection, and
responsibilities as prescribes by the Washington interscholastic activities association.
Students and/or their parents, guardians may make application for exception to these regulations and may
appeal any decision relative to such requests through their school principal.
STUDENT RESPONSIBILITIES
Participants are required to conform to the rules and regulations of their school, the Mukilteo School District 6,
the Western Conference and the WWIA; and to conduct themselves in a safe and sporting manner. Violators are
subject to discipline, suspension or expulsion.
STUDENT ELIGIBILITY REQUIRMENTS
Prior to becoming eligible a student must:
AGE: Be less than 20 years of age on September 1 for the fall sport season, on December 1 for the winter sport
season, and March 1 for the spring sport season.
Academic:
To be eligible, a student must be classified as a full time student. (Enrolled in attending classes for ½ time or a
full school day.)
For all sports, the first type of grade check is the one that occurs at the beginning of the sports season. This first grade
check evaluates the student-athlete’s grades during the previous semester/grading period to determine the studentathlete’s initial academic eligibility. There are 3 potential outcomes/action plans for establishing a student-athlete’s initial
academic eligibility:
1) Full Academic Eligibility: The student-athlete passed all of their previous semester/grading period classes and has a
minimum 2.0 GPA.
2) Mukilteo School District Probation: The student-athlete passed 5 out of 6 classes in their previous semester/grading
period and/or they have below a 2.0 GPA.
Action Plan: The student-athlete can fully participate in practice and is eligible to play in contests. After the 5th week of
competition in a sports season another grade check is conducted by the Athletic Department. If the student is passing all of
their classes and has a minimum 2.0 GPA, they will be cleared to continue to practice and compete. On the other hand, if
the student is not passing all of their classes and/or does not have a minimum 2.0 GPA, the student-athlete is removed
from the team for the duration of the season.
3) WIAA Probation: The student-athlete has failed 2 or more classes during the previous semester/grading period.
Action Plan: The student-athlete can practice, but not compete in contests for the first 5 weeks of competition in a sports
season. After the 5th week a grade check is conducted by the Athletic Department. At this time, the student-athlete must be
passing all of their classes and have a minimum 2.0 GPA to become eligible to compete in contests. If the student does not
meet this criterion, they will be removed from the team.
CONTINUING GRADE CHECKS
The second type of grade check is the in-season grade check process, which occurs at regular intervals after the 5th week
of competition. Kamiak student-athletes are expected to be passing all of their classes at all times according to Mukilteo
School District standards. The WIAA stipulates that schools must conduct grade checks for athletes every 3-6 weeks. The
Athletic Department has created a 2012-2013 grade check calendar for student-athletes, parents, and staff members. The
2012-2013 grade check calendar will help all of the stakeholders work together to make sure that each student-athlete is
placing academics as a priority in maintaining academic eligibility.
If a student-athlete does not meet the district standard of passing all of their classes and/or earning a minimum 2.0 GPA or
above on an in-season grade check, the student-athlete will be ineligible to compete in contests for 1 calendar week
following the date of the in-season grade check. During this time the student is expected to work closely with their
teachers to improve their academic standing. At the end of the 1 calendar week probationary period, the student-athlete
will submit a grade check sheet to the Athletic Department documenting that they are meeting the district academic
standard to re-establish his/her athletic eligibility. If the student is unable to meet the district standard at the end of the 1
week time period, their academic probation will be extended for another week so that the student-athlete can meet the
district academic standard.
It is my hope that the grade check process provides a clear and transparent support system for our student-athletes. In
addition to the grade check process, Kamiak High School also has many academic support systems that can be
utilized by all of our student-athletes. Please contact your son or daughter’s counselor, or me to find out more about
all of the academic support systems Kamiak has to offer.
Residency:
Reside in the Mukilteo School District 6 and the service area of the school of competition. The student must
reside with natural parents, parent of legal custody, or court appointed guardian has been acting in such capacity
for a period of one year. Students who do not meet the residence rule shall be eligible at the junior varsity
level of plan only. After one year of attendance the student athlete will be eligible to also play at the varsity
level.
Transfers:
Any student who has transferred from one school to another may have his/her eligibility affected. Concerning
athletic eligibility, any student considering a transfer should check with the building principal PRIOR to the
transfer.
Physical Examination:
Have passed a physical exam from a medical authority licensed to perform a physical exam prior to 1st
participation in the high school interscholastic athletic program. Prior to each subsequent year in high school,
the student shall furnish a written medical clearance for continued athletic participation signed by a medical
authority licensed to perform a physical exam.
Additional:
1. Complete and have on file at the school the parent permission form.
2. Turn out for at least the minimum required by their first competition
a. Football
14 days (10 for jamboree)
b. Wrestling
12 days (10 for jamboree)

3. Attend school at least ½ day in order to turn out in any sport that day.
Season Limitation
After beginning the seventh grade in school, students shall be allowed to participate in interscholastic contests
only during 6 interscholastic competitive years. He she shall have only 2 years of eligibility in the 7 th and 8 the
grades. If the 7th or 8 Th grade is repeated the student shall be eligible only during 2 years. After entering the
ninth grade, a student shall have four (4) consecutive years of interscholastic eligibility.
For the purpose of this rule, consecutive shall mean starting on a designated date (entrance into ninth grade) and
continuing without delay or interruption for four (4) consecutive years. Interscholastic eligibility refers to being
eligible for an academic year and not for each individual sport season.
Repeating a grade, nine through twelve, whether a student participates or not, will count toward a student’s four
(4) consecutive years of high school interscholastic eligibility.
Athletic eligibility:
Participants and the parents or guardians should be aware that participation in interscholastic athletes may result
in accidental injury, which in some cases may be serious in nature.
Non-school - sponsored program
The Mukilteo school district is not responsible or liable for non-school sponsored sports programs or programs
organized, promoted, or participated in by staff members. The decision to participate in such sport programs is
the responsibility of the student and his or her parents or guardians.
Early release for teams:
1. It is recognized that there will be times throughout the season when a team must be released from a
school early in order to fulfill a game commitment.
2. Coaches should not request an early release only when travel and game times necessities the release.
3. Do not allow students to get out of class earlier than the actual time needed for them to get ready.
4. The head coach must request an early dismissal for the members of his/her team by placing a notice in
the staff bulletin at least 3 days prior to the date of the release.
5. The names of all squad members must be listed in the staff bulletin, or in special bulletin the 1st time a
request is made.
6. Subsequent requests will simply refer to the name of the team, and list any additions or deletions from
the original list in the bulletin.
7. Athletes should be instructed to speak to their teachers at least one day prior to the dismissal to arrange
for make up work.
Insurance:
The Mukilteo School District requires that your athlete be covered by an adequate medical insurance plan. Your
family insurance plan may cover athletic participation. Please make certain of this coverage. Athletic insurance
is available for purchase through your school in conjunction with the student accident insurance program and
you may have secure information from the main office of any our middle and senior high schools.
Amateur standing:
A student who represents a school in an interscholastic sport must be an amateur in that sport. An amateur
student is one who engages in athletics for the physical, mental, and educational benefits derived there from,
and whom athletics is an avocation and not a source of financial reward. In order to maintain an amateur
standing in those sports under WIAA jurisdiction, the student athlete may not:
1. Accept merchandise or in kind gifts of more than 100$ in fair market value during any one calendar year
September 1 through August 31. Reduced membership fees or reduced user from athletic club,
recreation center, golf course, etc., do not count toward this 100$ limit.
