We are currently seeking a Full-Time Transplant Coordinator to join the LifeNet Health team
in our Richmond and Virginia Beach, VA locations.
As a Transplant Coordinator, you would be working within assigned hospitals to promote an
effective donation system. Ensuring key elements include the referral of all potential organ and
tissue donors to the Organ Procurement Organization (OPO), analysis & application of donation
specific data; establishing a customized donation awareness program; education and
development of relationships at all levels. Performs their job in a manner that exemplifies the
mission, attributes and values of LifeNet Health on a continuous basis.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS










Identifies and meets with key hospital personnel and physicians who may impact the
donation process. Ensures support of senior leadership, physician and clinical champions
while building effective relationships.
Establishes in collaboration with the hospital a strategic business plan which customizes
the donation process and allows efficient processes. Modifies plans as necessary to meet
the mutually established goals for education, conversion and quality.
Evaluates referrals for organ and tissue donor suitability based on LNH, OPTN/UNOS,
AOPO and CDC guidelines/recommendations and other regulatory requirements.
Ensures that the legal next-of-kin (NOK) is provided the option of organ and tissue
donation in a sensitive and caring manner that meets his/her emotional and cultural
needs.
Identifies organ and tissue-specific and behavioral risk factors utilizing all available
resources.
Ensures that all medical and legal requirements are met prior to organ and tissue
recovery.
Endeavors to physiologically manage the donor to achieve optimal organ function. The
Coordinator is knowledgeable of the pathophysiological sequela of brain death.
Ensures that donated organs are allocated in an efficient and timely manner in accordance
with LNH and OPTN/UNOS policies.
Ensures organs and tissue will be recovered to maximize utilization in accordance with
LNH and OPTN/UNOS policies. Preserves organs and tissue according to LNH and
national standards to ensure maximum viability for transplantation.
Maintains a permanent record of the organ and tissue donation in accordance with
accepted confidentiality standards.









Notifies donor family and appropriate donor hospital staff of the donation outcome in a
timely manner per LNH protocols.
Understands and supports the needs of the grieving family and respects the donor
family’s wishes regarding notification of the donation outcome.
Seeks to obtain increased knowledge to enhance individual performance in the organ and
tissue procurement profession.
Conducts him/herself with the highest degree of professionalism in the organ and tissue
procurement profession.
Responsible for continuous improvements to effectively facilitate the donation process
and meet the needs of the hospital and community.
Adheres to the clinical services job specific call schedule.
Performs other duties as assigned or requested.
Complies with LifeNet Health’s Quality Systems and Corporate Compliance programs.
Adheres to LifeNet Health’s attendance policy through regular and prompt attendance.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:













Must meet one of the following: Associates Degree from an accredited college/university
in a relevant Science major/program such as Biology, Chemistry or Social Work OR
Successful completion of a healthcare technical or professional program with current
certification such as Emergency Medicine Technician, and Respiratory Therapy OR
Licensed Practical Nurse, Bachelor’s degree in Nursing preferred.
Prior experience in organ recovery or tissue banking; preferred
Knowledge of procedures and services related to grief/family counseling and or
bereavement strongly preferred
Ability to work under extreme pressure and high emotional situations
Proficiency with using computer programs and electronic documents
Presentation experience speaking with various types of audiences strongly preferred
Prior experience in medical compliance and data sharing strongly preferred
Proven experience with strong professional verbal and written communications
Proven experience working both independently and in team environment
Valid state Driver’s license
Weekly –Ability to differentiate colors, lift or carry objects up to 50 lbs., and push or pull
objects of moderate weight (such as dollies, hand trucks, etc.)
Environment:Daily – Exposure to conditions where there is danger to life, body, or health
(bio-hazardous materials,) frequent contact with water or other liquid.
Weekly – Exposure to sufficient noise to cause distraction or possible hearing loss and
variations in temperature from hot to cold.
CHALLENGES, DECISION-MAKING and RECOMMENDATIONS:

Requires following somewhat defined procedures. Problems encountered are somewhat
complex. Requires making decisions about own work and working independently.


On a daily basis, decisions are made regarding medical management of organ donors,
staff triage, logistical arrangements and organ allocation.
On a daily basis, recommendations are made regarding basic medical management of the
organ donor, referral triage process and pre-approach huddle.
PROBLEM SOLVING SKILLS


Logical analysis: Requires thinking through and solving problems step by step; often has
to look beyond the obvious solution to a problem and dig deeper for the best solution.
Interpersonal communication: Requires communicating well with people at different
levels; frequently sharing information with others while listening to and understanding
their points of view.
