We will learn weaving vocabulary, how to select materials, design a project, and finish our newly woven cloth. We will also explore global weaving traditions and discuss sources of inspiration for weavers. After creating a sampler, students will have guidance from the instructor in designing and weaving a unique scarf. This course is an introduction to handweaving and is also ideal for those looking to refresh their skills. Course fee covers materials for the sampler; students will supply materials for their final project. Looms may be borrowed from the guild with a damage deposit. No prior weaving experience necessary. In the morning session, participants will learn to dress the loom two different ways. With our looms warped, we will spend the afternoon experimenting with a variety of design ideas, including the use of textured and specialty yarns, pick up, and hand manipulated effects. Participants will learn about some of the resources available to rigid heddle weavers. Bring your rigid heddle loom and discover its myriad possibilities! No prior weaving experience necessary. Saturday, March 14, 2015 Part A: Warping 10am-12pm Part B: Designing and Weaving 12:30pm-3:30pm Instructor: Noor Iqbal Fee $80 Weaving Rag Rugs #102 Prerequisite: beginner weaving, must be able to warp a floor loom. Participants will learn how to select and prepare warp and weft materials for six different rag rug samples. They will learn finishing techniques including warp and weft protectors. Students are expected to warp floor looms in advance of the workshop with the supervision of the instructor. Material Cost $20 included, other materials required.Thefirst two evenings are for warping the floor looms, the next 3 full day sessions are for weaving the samples. We will use a combination of wet felting and needle felting to create a one-of-a-kind functional Art Piece that you will want to wear all year long. Sun Mar 15, 9-12 am #110 Learn all you need to know about washing and , preparing dog hair for spindling. Different blends will be discussed. The suitability of dog hair from different breeds will be considered. This class will be part demonstration and part workshop. We can look at a sample of your own dog hair to see if it is suitable for spindling and/or spinning. Should you wish to pursue this skill at home with your own dog, wool fibre for blending can be purchased from the instructor This class is only open to those who have attended Class 1 & 2. Fee $40 Learn the ancient art of Viking knitting. No knitting or wire working skills required. While the finished piece of jewelry will look like twisted knit stitches, the process is simple loops of wire. In this one-day workshop you will learn simple techniques and see how small variations can make different chains. You will walk away from the day with a beautiful bracelet or pair of dangle earrings. $10 supply charge will cover all the material you need for the day's project. If you have small wire cutters, jewelry needle nose pliers, or mandral, bring them but do not go out and purchase any as shared tools will be provided. Additional Viking knitting supplies may be purchased at the end of the workshop if you would like to continue this art form at home.
