Student’s Guide to Safety Because I have the right to do a science fair project, I accept the responsibility to: Be sure that all science fair activities are approved by my teacher and parents. Use patience and common sense when working with science equipment and materials. Report all accidents to my parents and teacher no matter how minor they are or seem to be. Know where the fire alarm and first aid kits are located. Never taste or touch chemicals unless specifically told to do so by my parents or teacher. Roll up long and baggy sleeves above the elbows before doing science fair experiments. Wear old shirts for very messy experiments, but be careful that they are not too baggy. Wear safety glasses, if required, when doing experiments. Be alert and proceed with caution when doing science fair activities. Wash my hands thoroughly before and after doing any science fair experiment. Never drink or eat from glassware, such as bottles, glasses, beakers, or cylinders. Never “suck up” a liquid chemical with my mouth. Never sniff or breathe vapors from any glass or chemical. Never point a sharp object or a test tube at anyone, or look directly into a test tube when mixing or heating chemicals. Review “stop/drop/roll” procedures for fire safety. Keep the floor free of spilled materials. Accept responsibility for the cleaning of science equipment used in science fair projects. Do my share to clean up all materials after completing science fair activities in school and at home. Keep accurate records of my results and share these promptly with my parents and teacher. Complete my assignments on time and to the best of my ability. Observe the safety precautions necessary regarding the use of fire, handling of animals, and using electricity. Learn the meaning of each safety symbol below. Be the most responsible person that I can possibly be. Keep this page handy throughout my project so may study it frequently. Student’s Safety Contract I, _________________________, recognize that doing a science fair project is an important part of my life. To protect myself and others from danger, I agree to take full responsibility for my own safety and that of others. I further agree to follow the safety guidelines as outlined in the “STUDENT’S GUIDE TO SCIENCE FAIR SAFETY”. In addition, I agree to conduct myself in a responsible manner at all times. _________________________________ Student Signature _________________ Date _________________________________ Parent Signature _________________ Date _________________________________ Teacher Signature _________________ Date Student’s Guidelines on Working with Animals Animals play an important role in scientific investigations. They help scientists discover many new and important things. If you choose to use animals as part of your science fair project, you must be aware of, and obey, any laws (for example, state laws) that govern the use of animals in scientific investigations. DO these things if you plan to use animals in your science fair study: DO get approval from your parents and teacher BEFORE you use animals in your study. DO remember that animals are living things and must be treated with and respect. DO use animals only in the search for new knowledge or to prove a theory or principle. DO use only tame (no animals captured from the “wild” please) and nonpoisonous animals in your research. DO keep all animals in excellent condition. DO provide animals with the proper diet. Avoid contamination of the animal’s food. DO provide adequate housing for the animals. Cages should be roomy. Gnawing materials and exercise devices are recommended. Do provide appropriate environmental temperature for animals. DO keep animal on a restricted diet only until an observable change occurs. Then restore the animal to healthy condition. DO prevent others from teasing and abusing the animals. DO have a plan for a permanent home for the animal after your research is complete. care Working with Animals Student’s Contract I, _________________________, have reviewed the “Student’s Guidelines on Working with Animals” and agree to “DO those things” if I use animals as part of my science fair project. _________________________________ Student Signature _________________ Date _________________________________ Parent Signature _________________ Date _________________________________ Teacher Signature _________________ Date
