TRANSITION ASSESSMENT
Assessment is an intervention in and of itself. Individuals change as a result of assessment! (Leconte, 2007)
Assessment is an ongoing process rather than a destination. As youth accrue experience they learn more about their
preferences, strengths, and needs, and, as a result, their visions of the future come into sharp focus. (Trainor, Smith, & Kim,
2012)
Levels of Transition Assessment (Kortering & Braziel, 2008; Leconte, 2007; Rojewski, 2002)
Level 1 -For most students
• Includes review of existing information from current psychological report (e.g., IQ, achievement)
• General interview or survey about school, interests, work history and family jobs (http://www.nsttac.org)
• Career Interests assessment (Self-Directed Search Forms Explorer, E, and R [several vendors], Harrington-0’Shea
Career Decision Making Inventory (AGS), Kuder, ACT Explore and Plan
• Study Skills or Student Style Questionnaire (e.g., SMALSI, LASSI,on-line)
• Transition Planning Inventory (PRO-ED), Casey Life Skills (on-line)
If need more information, conduct Level Two assessments.
Level Two-For some
• For those having difficulty making a career choice or clarifying interests
• Expands on Level 1, targeting information related to work-related behaviors, general career maturity, and daily or
independent living skills
• Some measure of actual talents or aptitudes (e.g., Differential Aptitude Test, Occupational Assessment Inventory
Scales, Weissan Test of Mechanical Ability)
• Other measures of actual talents or aptitudes (Armed Services Vocational Aptitude Battery, General Aptitude Test
Battery)
• Daily and independent living
• Other: work with local VR counselor, O’Net
If more information is needed, move to Level Three assessments
Level Three— For those with greatest transition, career and vocational challenges or barriers
• For students needing additional assistance with identifying long term employment, education, and/or independent
living goals when earlier assessments inconclusive
• Or, for those with more significant disabilities
• Generally takes several days
• Usually conducted by a vocational assessment specialist
• Uses real or simulated work for assessment and career exploration
