The purpose of the scholarship is to encourage a meritorious student in the third year of study in the in any field
of engineering associated with the chemical engineering discipline in the Bachelor of Engineering program.

Value of the scholarship: $2,000 for 1 year.
Relevant field: means any field of engineering in the disciplines of chemical engineering.
Eligibility: A student is an eligible applicant for the award of a scholarship in the year, if –
(a) in that year, the student –
(i)
is a domestic student as defined in the Fee Rules; and
(ii) is enrolled full-time in the third year of a Bachelor of Engineering or Bachelor of Engineering (Honours)
program, in a relevant field; and
(iii) is a member of IChemE or has applied for membership prior to application; and
(b)
the student submits an application for the scholarship in accordance with subrule 3.2; and
(c)
the student does not hold a scholarship that the Head considers to be similar.

THE INSTITUTION OF CHEMICAL ENGINEERS (IChemE) MING LEUNG SCHOLARSHIP
(The IChemE Ming Leung Scholarship was established in 1993 by the Queensland Branch of the Institution of Chemical
Engineers (IChemE) to encourage a meritorious student who is undertaking third year study in the Bachelor of Engineering
or Bachelor of Engineering (Honours) program in either chemical engineering, chemical and biological engineering,
chemical and materials engineering, chemical and metallurgical engineering.
Professor Ming Leung was a greatly respected and highly talented chemical engineer as well as Head of the Department of
Chemical Engineering from 1980 to 1985. His untimely death was a great loss to both the profession and to the University.)
1. Purpose
The purpose of the scholarship is to encourage a meritorious student in the third year of study in the Bachelor of
Engineering or Bachelor of Engineering (Honours) program.
2. Definitions
In these Rules –
Bachelor of Engineering program means the Bachelor of Engineering or Bachelor of Engineering (Honours) program, or a
dual program that includes the Bachelor of Engineering or Bachelor of Engineering (Honours) program.
Head means the Head of School, School of Chemical Engineering
IChemE means Institution of Chemical Engineers.
relevant field means any field of engineering in the disciplines of chemical engineering.
scholarship means the Institution of Chemical Engineers (IChemE) Ming Leung Scholarship.
3. Scholarship
3.1 One scholarship may be awarded by Senate on the recommendation of theHead, as a representative of the relevant
selection committee established under subrule 3.1.
3.2 The value of the scholarship is $2,000 and is held for one year.
4. Selection process
4.1 For the selection process for a year, the Associate Dean must establish a selection
committee, comprising –
(a) the Associate Dean, as chair of the committee; and
(b) at least one representative of the Queensland Branch of IChemE who is not an employee of the University; and
(c) at least one member of the University’s academic staff who is currently teaching in a relevant field.
4.2 An application for a scholarship for the year must be lodged with the Headby the date set by theHead.
4.3 A student is an eligible applicant for the award of a scholarship in the year, if –
(a) in that year, the student –
(i) is a domestic student as defined in the Fee Rules; and
(ii) is enrolled full-time in the third year of a Bachelor of Engineering program, in a relevant field; and
(iii) is a member of IChemE or has applied for membership prior to application; and
(b) the student submits an application for the scholarship in accordance with subrule 3.2; and
(c) the student does not hold a scholarship that the Head considers to be similar.
4.4 The selection committee must rank the eligible applicants consecutively in order of merit, based on, for each applicant(a) the standard of the applicant’s academic achievement in the Bachelor of Engineering program to date; and
(b) the strength of the interest that the applicant demonstrates in a relevant field; and
(c) the applicant’s personal qualities, including leadership potential; and
(d) any other matter that the selection committee considers to be relevant to the applicant’s future success in the engineering
profession.
