PRE CONFERENCE WORKSHOP:
***African Canadian Literature: Multidisciplinary Curriculum Workshop for
Middle and High School Teachers ***
Tuesday August 27, 2013
Participants to begin workshop (Part 1) at 9:30 AM to 12:30, Education Resources Centre (ERC), 3rd
floor, TEL Building
Participants break for lunch and keynote presentation in TEL Auditorium, basement, room 001,
Participants to resume workshop (Part 2) 2:30 PM to 3:45 PM (Part 2), Education Resources Centre, 3rd
floor, TEL Building
This workshop will give participants access to a range of materials and curriculum related activities on African
Canadians that can be used in middle and secondary curriculum in a variety of subjects.
The materials consist of four autobiographies: Carol Talbot’s Growing Up Black in Canada, Cheryl
Foggo’s Pourin’ Down Rain, Stanley Grizzle’s My Name’s Not George: The story of the Brotherhood of
Sleeping Car Porters in Canada, Herb Carnegie, A Fly in a Pail of Milk: the Herb Carnegie Story, all of which
are available on line on a website available to ORION subscribers. Just added is M. NourbeSe Philip’s novel
Harriet’s Daughter. Ancillary materials include interviews with three of the authors, links to a variety of relevant
materials (for example, newspaper articles from the Chicago Defender on the Sleeping Car Porters); and ideas
for use at different grade levels and subjects. Participants will work on ways to use the materials in their
classes, and will also be able to indicate to the designers what other materials would be helpful to
them. Copyrighted materials (the autobiographies and some of the other material) are available only on
subscriber sites, but interviews and other materials will be public. (To see if your Board subscribes, go to
http://www.orion.on.ca/the-network/connected-institutions/. Toronto Catholic District School Board now also
subscribes).
Teachers who are interested in participating in the African Canadian Literature Workshop should register in the
YCEC 2013 Summer Institute AND also send their contact information to YCEC at ycec@edu.yorku.ca, Tel
416-650-8458 indicating their desire to register in the African Canadian Literature Workshop. Professor Leslie
Sanders, who is leading the workshop, will then be contacting registered teachers directly to follow up.
Workshop organizers gratefully acknowledge funding from York University Liberal Arts & Professional Studies
